Sixteen competitors modeled the classy look of wool in the Make-lt-With-Wool contest held December 8 at the Sheraton East, Lancaster. Marie France Reyes topped the winners in all categories and will be sent on the all-expenses-paid trip to the national convention held at Long Beach, California, on January 17 to 20. To win, a contestant must have more than a finely constructed gar ment, she must present an overall picture of the modem well dressed. These two top winners in the Make-it-Wlth-Wool state contest will travel to California in January to compete nationwide. Her knowledge of fabric and design, the fit of the garment, as well as its suitability to her age and way of life must be displayed with com mendable poise. Reyes modeled a two-piece sateen wool outfit. This was her fourth year in the annual competi tion, and the second time that she advanced to national competition. The Greensburg woman is a senior at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she majors in fashion merchandising. Reyes paid $4O a yard for the wool that she tailored from a Vog ue pattern that she altered. Wear Reyes attests to having a natural talent for fixing machines and sew ing. She recalls that at 12 years of age, she found a broken sewing machine, fixed it, and taught her self to sew. While in college, she alters dres ses and formats for classmates. “People seem intrigued by the things that I make. I think it is real ly sad that more people can’t sew,” she said. Although Reyes will teach sew ing skills to interested persons, she said, “If you don’t have it (talent) in yourself, it is hard to teach a person.” After graduation, she plans to open a bridal shop with her father, Mike Reyes. Her mother is Pierrette. Another top winner, Christie J. Gallagher of Uniontown, is also eligible to attend national competi tion. Christie placed first in the junior division with her 100% wool forest green skirt and a plaid vest with a black velveteen collar. The association hopes to raise enough money to send her; other wise, she will need to pay her own travel expenses. Those who compete nationally, must win at state competition after placing first in regional competition. Tara Yuhas of Seotrium placed second in the junior division. Hon orable mentions went to Amy Sue Eshelman, Sinking Spring; Jodell Ann Rhoads, Berlin; and Francis Shick, New Castle. Other entries in the senior divi sion included second-place winner Amber Dawn Sertkin of Three Springs; Lori Brandt of Manheim, and Anette Lovell of University Park. In the adult division, Ruth God dard of Hollsopple placed first with a wool plaid suit in lavendar, black, purple, rose, and aqua. Sec ond place went to Katherine Gren ci of New Castle, and honorable mention to Frances Tittle of Atglen. Debbie Black of Boswell and Trisha Gallagher of Uniontown placed first and second respective ly in the preteen division.
