National recognition will be given to Pennsylvania FFA members at the world’s largest annual youth convention, the 63rd National FFA Conven tion held Nov. 8-10 in Kansas City, Mo. Nearly 23,000 FFA members, guests, and supporters are expected to attend. The convention will feature eight sessions with addres ses by top speakers from the fields of education, govern ment, and agriculture. Among those scheduled to appear are U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Clayton Yeutter; Joe Clark, subject of the movie “Lean on Me”; Rich DeVos, Amway Corporation president; Fred McClure, special assistant to President George Bush; and motivational speakers Zig Ziglar and W. Mitchell. In addition, conven tion participants will have opportunities to attend leader ship workshops, tour Kansas City manufacturing and agri business sites, take in American Royal Livestock Show performances, and meet with their peers from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Other highlights will include the selection of top FFA members in 29 agricultural proficiency award areas, 10 national career skill competitions, and both prepared and extemporaneous public speaking contests. At the Friday afternoon session, the American FFA Degree the high est degree awarded to FFA members will be presented to 1,056 recipients representing the top two-tenths of one percent of FFA membership. Top chapters in safety, com munity development, and overall activities will also be recognized. In addition, the 1990-91 national FFA officers will be elected and installed. The National Agricultural Career Show and the Nation al FFA Alumni Convention are held in conjunction with the FFA convention. FFA is a national organization of 387,042 members in 7,634 local chapters preparing for careers in the science, business, and technology of agriculture. Lamar Gockley, Mohnton, has been nominated and is expected to receive the highest degree awarded by the Vational FFA Organization, the American FFA Degree. This honor is based on outstanding achievements in igricultural production, processing and service programs ind on demonstrated leadership abilities. Gockley will be me of the 1,056 members receiving the award at the 63rd National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Mo., Novem >er 8-10. Only one in 400 of the 386,832 FFA members have idvanced through Chapter and State FFA Degrees to earn this national award. Gockley, the son of Glenn and Mar garet Gockley, is currently dairy farming in partnership with his father in Mohnton. He is a member of the Grass land chapter and his agricultural education instructor/FFA advisor is Mr. Clifford J. Pay. Each degree winner receives a gold American FFA key and a partially-paid trip to the national FFA convention in Kansas City. The American FFA Degree recognition program is sponsored by the Agricultural Division of American Cyanamid Company of Wayne, N.J.; Case IH of Racine, Wis.; the Farm Credit System of Washington, D.C.; Na-Churs Plant Food Company of Marion, Ohio; Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. of Des Moines, lowa and Pirelli Armstrong Tire Corporation of New Haven, Conn, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. Hamish, 18, Vice President of the PA FFA association will represent the state as an official delegate to the 63rd National FFA Convention Nov. 8-10 in Kansas City, Mo. Hamish will join 276 state FFA officers who will con duct the business of the National FFA Organization during special sessions of the convention. Hamish is the son of Robert & Marti Hamish of Man heim and is a member of the Manheim FFA Chapter. Caressa Crone, Danville, Pa., has been nominated and is expected to receive the highest degree awarded by the National FFA Organization, the American FFA Degree. This honor is based on outstanding achievements in agricultural production, processing and service programs and on demonstrated leadership abilities. Crone will be one of the 1,056 members receiving the award at the 63rd National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Mo., Novem ber 8-10. Only one in 400 of the 386,832 FFA members has advanced through Chapter and State FFA Degrees to earn this national award. Crone, the daughter of Susan Cope, is currently working for the USDA as a Program Assistant in the Northumberland County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. She is a member of the Danvil le chapter and her agricultural education instructor/FFA advisor is Paul Heasley.
