Prostaph Update Due
It’s been a long time since
members and others have had any
new information about the ELISA
test for Staph, aureus mastitis
(known as Pro Staph I) that was
introduced last January. An
update is overdue.
What is Pro Staph I? It is a rapid
test of a non-sterile milk sample
(that is, a DHIA sample) for the
presence of the antigen that a dairy
cow produces when she is infected
with Staph, aureus mastitis.
In theory, the test results should
correlate with the presence of
Staph, mastitis; a negative mean
ing no mastitis, a positive meaning
infection.
There have been quite a few
articles about this test this year in
trade literature. If you have fol
lowed them, you know that there
is considerable debate about what
the test results mean.
ITS MORE THAN
Here’s one tractor that does more work than a half dozen
tractors combined* Put it to work on any kind of farm chore.
Plowing. Cultivating. Loading. Mowing. Backhoeing. Hauling.
And, like we said, more.
The L3BSO has a strong 4-cylinder diesel engine, rated at 32
PTO horsepower. It also has direct injection for good fuel econ
omy and quick starts, linger intervals between oil changes, too.
A couple of other features make this Kubota tractor a real
workhorse. An 8 x 8 partially synchronized transmission for easy
shifting. Position and draft control for more accurate implement
placement.
So come in and take a look
at the Kubota LBBSO. You’ll feSSfl HU DU I II

The original research done at
Penn State last year showed that a
negative test result was very reli
able, but a positive result had
about a 50% probability of truly
being positive for Staph, aureus
mastitis.
More research has been under
way at Penn State this year and
should be over soon. It is hoped
this latest information will reveal
more about the reliability of a
positive test result.
Differing opinions between
researchers in states where
research has been done has been a
real obstacle to the uniform adop
tion of this technology across the
U.S. Some states are using the
Pro Staph I analysis quite exten
sively. Other states have been

that intriduced the test, will con

National Mastitis Council Annual
Meeting next February to discuss
their findings. It’s hoped that a
common discussion will provide a
common basis for understanding
and a uniform proposal for use of
test results.
More information should be
available when the latest Penn
