A22-Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, October 27, 1990 I On The Reco Dick Barth PA DHIA General Mgi Prostaph Update Due It’s been a long time since members and others have had any new information about the ELISA test for Staph, aureus mastitis (known as Pro Staph I) that was introduced last January. An update is overdue. What is Pro Staph I? It is a rapid test of a non-sterile milk sample (that is, a DHIA sample) for the presence of the antigen that a dairy cow produces when she is infected with Staph, aureus mastitis. In theory, the test results should correlate with the presence of Staph, mastitis; a negative mean ing no mastitis, a positive meaning infection. There have been quite a few articles about this test this year in trade literature. If you have fol lowed them, you know that there is considerable debate about what the test results mean. More research has been under way at Penn State this year and should be over soon. It is hoped this latest information will reveal more about the reliability of a positive test result. Differing opinions between researchers in states where research has been done has been a real obstacle to the uniform adop tion of this technology across the U.S. Some states are using the Pro Staph I analysis quite exten sively.
