Often it’s the heavy weight class winner that gets the best chance to grab the overall grand honor at a farm show. But this lime it was a 1,320-pound medium weight winner that clearly grabbed the judge’s attention at the Manhcim Fair Beef Show Tuesday night. “Lightning, ” a 1,320-pound medium weight Angus/Simmental cross, took champion overall spot light at the show, featuring 11 exhibitors. Liz Hess, 15, a member of the Manhcim Central FFA, clinched the championship with the steer. She also exhibited at the 1989 Keystone International Livestock Exposi tion in Harrisburg. “Lightning” competed against 11 other steers in a class that show judge Rod Gilbert, an instructor at Delaware Valley College and superintendent of livestock at the school, liked for the quality over the quantity. “Even though the quantity wasn’t there, the quality was very good the whole show,” said Gil bert, who also judged last year’s Manhcim Fair beef show. “I think they’re all really adequate in the amount of finish they have.
