016-Lancaster Farming Saturday, October 13,1990 ST. LOUIS, Mo. The Euro pean Community (EC) may soon surpass the United States in pro ducing new non-food products from farm commodities, accord ing to a team of 12 U.S. university agricultral researchers just back from Europe. The U.S. researchers said an annual $l3O million investment in applied research by government and private industry could put the EC in the lead in developing new products and new markets. The U.S. research team partici pated in the Eurotech Com Tour and Conference co-sponsored by ICI Americas Inc. and the Nation al Corn Growers Association (NCGA). According to tour leader and Alan Kemper, NCGA presi dent, the tour and conference were designed to promote and exchange information on alternative uses of com with key European agribusi ness firms and researchers. The EC’s greatly expanded research program, called Euro pean Collective Linkage of Agri culture and Industry through Research, (ECLAIR) involves 46 research projects at 360 institutions. “Of all the projects we were COCALICO CONCRETE Rudy Mix Concrtl* For Ewory Purpou SERIVCE IS OUR BUSINESS • Quality Controlled Concrete • Radio Equipped Fleet • Mix Uniformity thru Automation For Prompt Courteous Service Call COCALICO CONCRETE (215) 267-7591 A ' M "“tirjKW!73 Toll Free. Kemper says hope for addition al U.S. research funding is found in both the U.S. House and Senate versions of the 1990 farm bill. There’s a gap between public research and private development and production of agriculturally derived products, and the prop osed legislation is designed to nar row that gap.” Several new products currently produced and marketed by ICI and other companies in Europe were observed by the U.S. research team. “ICI as a company utilizes com modities in every way possible. Corn is used in several areas including pharmaceutical and bio logical products,” said Jerry CONSTRUCTION NEEDS Quinn, director of market deve lopment, ICI Agricultural Pro ducts. “We are extremely inter ested in learning more about new uses and available technology. We’ve gained knowledge about both on this tour.” Quorn™ an alternative food source that is low in fat and high in fiber and protein, is made by utilizing glucose as a component in a fermentation process. The product is marketed in Europe in meat pies, casseroles, and by itself. Quorn™ is produced and marketed by Marlow Foods, a subsidiary of ICI. Two new biodegradable plastic products were also introduced to the research group. Id's PHBV™ (polyhydroxybutyrate hydroxy valerate), made from com, wheat or potato carbohy drates, is presently being pro duced in Europe. The finished product can be used to hold liquid material just like polyethylene, except it will fully degrade under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions.
