ps-Lancaster Farming Saturday, October 13,1990 Northrup King (Continued from Page D 6, excellent grain to stover ratios for top quality silage. N 9190 has exceptional drouth tolerance. For silage or earlage uses only. Soybeans Northrup King’s soybean breeding program is conducted at four major research stations in the U.S. Its focus is developing high yielding, disease resistant soybean varieties adapted to the major maturity groups. Special attention is given to developing cyst nema tode resistance for the northern maturities. Last year Northrup King released S 31-33, an early Group 111 variety with cyst nema tode resistance. This year North rup King released nine varieties; five with cyst nematode resistance including two Group IV varieties. S 00-88 Our earliest soybean for the North! This Group 00 soybean is adapted to all row widths and has excellent stress tolerance. S 00-88 is tolerant to iron deficiency chlor osis and has field tolerance to Phy tophthora root rot. Plant no deeper than 1 1/2 inches. S 25-15 This new Mid-Group II soy bean has high yield potential and can be grown in most row widths. S 25-15 is stress tolerant and has good emergence. It is best adapted for well-drained soils. S 28-18 A new Late-Group II variety, S 28-18 is moderately tolerant to brown stem rot, has very good standabihty and is adapted to most row widths. It is best adapted to well-drained soils. S 29-39 A new late Group II soybean with outstanding yield potential. S 29-39 is resistant to Phytophthora root rot (races 1-3 and 6-10) and has good field tolerance to other known races. It can be grown in most row widths and is stress tol erant. 529-39 produces a yellow hilum gram. S 43-34 S 43-34 is a high yielding cyst nematode resistant variety (races 3 and 4) with good drouth tolerance. This early Group IV soybean has very good standability and can be used in all row widths. S 48-84 A high yielding late Group IV soybean with good stress .toler ance. S4B-84 is moderately resis tant to stem canker and to soybean cyst nematode (races 3 and 4). It can be used in narrow rows and has very good shatter resistance. S 61-89 A strong standing variety with resistance to races 3, 4 and 5 of soybean cyst nematode. S 61-89 is an early Group VI variety that is also resistant to root knot nema tode (M. incognita) and frogeye leafspot. It has very good stress tolerance and excellent resistance to shattering. S 64-23 A good looking soybean with a good disease package. S 64-23 is a mid-Group VI variety that is resis tant to soybean cyst nematode (races 3 and 4), root knot nema tode (M. incognita), lance nema tode and frogeye leaf spot. It is adapted to most soil types. S 83-30 This early to mid-Group VIII soybean is high yielding and strong standing. It is resistant to soybean cyst nematode (race 3), root knot nematode (M. incognita) and stem canker. It also has resis tance to lance nematode. SB3-80 has very good standability. Sorghum Northrup King’s sorghum breeding activities are headquar tered at its new research center in Victoria, TX. There plant breeders focus on developing high yielding hybrids with disease resistance and resistance to Biotype E green bug. A special emphasis is also being put on white and yellow grain types. Northrup King has two recent sorghum releases avail able for 1991. KS 710 KS 710 is a high yielding Biotype E greenbug resistant hybrid with excellent standability and exceptional plant health. This medium full.season hybrid offers very good drouth tolerance and threshability. It has bronze col ored grain and hetero-yellow endosperm. KS 714 Y A medium full season hybrid with Biotype E greenburg resis tance and cream colored grain. KS 714 Y is a drouth tolerant hybrid with very good standability and threshability. It also has good digestibility for better feed conversion. Othello, WA focuses on develop ing varieties with multiple pest resistance, winterhardiness, multi leaflet characteristics and high relative feed value. Northrup King announces the release of two top producing alfalfa varieties. Multi King 1 This advanced generation multi-leaflet variety from North rup King is becoming the alfalfa industry leader. Plants of Multi- King 1 carry the multi-leaflet genetic trait; extra leaflets develop at the petiole where ordinarily only trifoliate leaves appear. Tests show Multi King 1 has high rela tive feed value and high yield potential as well as resistance to seven major pests (bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, anthracnose (race 1), spotted alfalfa aphid, stem nematode and verticillium wilt). It has excellent winterhardiness for medium to long term stands. Multi King 1 is for the grower who wants to pro duce high quality forage. Crockett Crockett alfalfa from Northrup King is specifically bred for the South. It has resistance to six major pests: bacterial wilt, Fusar arium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, common leaf spot, anthracnose (race 1) and spotted alfalfa aphid. Crocket matures early and has OPEN HOUSE ■ OCTOBER 26 m Bh Factory Or Distributor Representatives Will Be Present To Help With Any Questions On Our Products.
