D24-Lancaster Farming Saturday, September 8,1990 Horse WILLIAMSPORT (Lycoming Co.) The 4-H District V Horse Show was held on August 18 at the Clinton County Fairgrounds. Ten counties from the region had 4-H members represented. To be eligible, the 4-H’er had to have placed within the individual coun ty 4-H horse roundup held prior to the district show. Warren’s WARREN (Warren Co.) 1 he OUth annual Warren County Fair was full of shows, judging, and other activities. An integral part of each year’s fair are the various 4-H lives tock shows and roundups. The fair, for the most part, is the cul mination of the entire year for the 4-H member and project. According to James Cowden, extension agent, there are near ly 200 active 4-H members in the animal science related clubs. The Saturday before the fair, the Warren County 4-H horse roundup was held. Nearly sixty 4-Hers competed in more than 40 different performance classes hoping for the opportunity to advance to the District 4-H Horse Show, September 8-9, at the Crawford County Fairgrounds. On Tuesday of the fair, 4-H members competed in showman ship, grooming, and various horse halter classes. The top senior showman was Michelle Leach of Russell. Leach was also selected as the champion master fitter in the senior division. The other blue award winners in the senior class were Sonna DeVore and Sonya Kellogg. Red rosettes were won by Sean Lore, Melissa Haehn, and Jolinda Dexter. In the intermediate group, Teresa Grosch of Russell was selected the best in show manship. Kirk Guiher of Sugar Grove was chosen as master fit ter, and he earned a blue showmanship award. Other showmanship awards were earned by Jennifer Bloom gren, blue; Tracie Baker and Joanna Carr, red; and Jamie Cress ley and Heather Sleeman, white. The outstanding junior in both showmanship and fitting was Jessica Kiser of Russell. Patrick Guiher won a blue rosette in showmanship. Red awards were presented to Amanda Rapp, Kelly Kuzminski, and Tracy Bloomgren. The white winners were Jackie Lore and Carrie McDannel. The 4-H members were permitted to enter one of the halter classes. Placings in these classes were: Registered Mare-1. Kirk Guiher; 2. Patrick Guiher; 3. Heather Sleeman; Registered Gelding-1. Teresa Grosch; 2. Jessica Confer; Pony Mare 50-56”- 1. Jessica Kiser; 2. Amanda Rapp. 4-H Market Lambs The second year as a member of the 4-H Shamrock Sheep Club was the charm for 14-year-old Josh Anderson of Russell. Anderson’s grand champion lamb weighed 126 pounds and caught the judge’s eye in the heavyweight market lamb class. The reserve champion market lamb was owned and shown by Meghan Scott of Bear Lake. > This is Scott’s first year in the 4-H club. Her lamb weighed 116 pounds. The other weightclass champions in this year’s 4-H market lamb show are lightweight- Jolene Cross of Bear Lake, champion; Valerie Benedict of Bear Lake, reserve champion; mediumweight- Julie Brown of Warren, champion; Ann Ekdahl of Chandlers Valley, reserve champion. In showmanship competition, Matt Burlingame of Russell won the senior division, Jerry Van Ord of Russell topped the intermediate division, and Erik Brown of Warren won the junior division. Other junior 4-H members who placed in showman ship included Kyle Anderson, Meghan Scott, Erin Wright, and Jolene Cross. Intermediate members (age 12-14) who earned awards were Joshua Anderson, Julie Brown, Tim Kireta, and Jenny Eckman. Senior showmen included Pam Lyon, Tammy Kireta, Toby Angove, and Valerie Benedict. The blocking contest, where the 4-H member grooms a lamb in a timed event, had a record 15 winners. Those earning master fitter awards were Pam Lyon, Valerie Benedict, Herb Anderson, Tim Kirela, Tammy Kireta, Josh Anderson, Jason Jaquay, Todd Jaquay, Paul Ekey, Ann Ekdahl, Elaine Ekdahl, Tony Angove, Matt Burlingame, Conrad Hultman, and Jerry Van Ord. Other competitions in this skill event included Meghan Scott, Julie Brown, Erik Brown, Kyle Anderson, Erin Wright, Jolene Cross, Jnny Eckman and Joe Van Ord. Junior Dairy Show The supreme champion of the Warren County Fair’s Junior Dairy Show was no surprise. Melissa Wilcox of Russell showed her six-year-old Holstein cow, Ivy, to win the senior champion and grand champion honors of the Holstein breed. She was also selected the supreme champion of all the dairy breeds. The champions and reserve champions of the other breeds included Richard Gilkinson of Russell won grand champion honors with his four-year-old Brown Swiss cow named Angel. The reserve grand champion Brown Swiss was'exhibited by Carrie Swanson of Russell. Her five-month-old calf, Tina was selected over some older heifers. Two sisters captured top hon ors in the Jersey breed. Deborah Callan of Sugar Grove won Show Held At Clinton Co. Some of the top placings from the district show are eligible to show at the Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show on October 26, 27, and 28 in Harrisburg. Judges at the District V show were Western - Dr. Steve Jackson, Kentucky; English - Cynthia Weiner, Bucks County; and Trial - Janet Olenda, Sullivan County. 4-H Competitors Yield Winners 4-H Light Horse Winners from Lycoming Coun ty included: Jennifer Campbell, RR#5 Mun cy: First place - Pleasure Pairs; First place - County Team. Heather Campbell, RR#5 Mun cy: First place - Pleasure Pairs; First place - County Team; First place - Western Riding; First place - Open Trail (Horse); Sec- grand champion with her three-year-old cow called Valerena Chief. Her sister, Laura Callan, showed a five-year-old cow named Bess to the reserve champion honors. The grand champion Guernsey cow, Cassandra, was shown by Belmer Hitchcock of Russell. Jeffrey Gourley of Sugar Grove earned reserve champion honors with his senior two year-old cow, Princess. The best Ayrshires were shown by Car rie Swanson of Russell and Tonya Gilkinson of Russell. Carrie’s grand champion was a senior calf called Jackie. Tonya’s reserve champion was a yearling heifer named Nicki. The reserve champion of the holstein breed was shown by Matthew Wilcox of Russell. His four-year-old cow named Barbara finished sec ond to his sister’s grand champion. An important part of the 4-H dairy program is the members’ demonstration of showmanship and fitting skills on their, ani mals. Members compete against one another according to vari ous age groups —junior (age 8-11), intermediate (age 12-14), and senior (age 15-18).
