Reiff Captures Coveted Sheep Supreme Championship ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff ELIZABETHTOWN (Lancas ter Co.) Imagine having to compete against 275 exhibitors in the grand championship contest. Then imagining winning. Accepting the challenge at what may very well be Pennsylvania’s largest town fair youth sheep com petition which took all of seven and a half hours Wednesday at the Elizabethtown Fair was Lisa Reiff, 12, Strasburg, who won supreme sheep champion honors with “Chance,” her Suffolk wether. Lisa also picked up overall market and pen-of-three champ ionships at the fair. Also competing was the breed supreme champion, Wendall M. Landis, 14, Manheim, with his Hampshire ewe. And he competed against 30 others just in the same breed class. On a rainy, soggy day, many local sheep breeders, exhibitors, and spectators turned out for the show, which hosted 34 entries in the Dorset breed, 62 in the Suffolk breed, and many more in the mark et lamb championship. Challenging to decide Judge Dick Kuzemchak, Penn State shepherd, was pleased with the entries, from which he found it challenging to decide on a winner. Regarding the champion breed, Kuzemchak was impressed with the way she looked. “I think she had a lot of eye appeal that really kind of made her stand out,” he said. “I think she is just a tremendous ewe.” Kuzemchak said the judging is based on the size and scale Of the breed, the physical correctness, and the overall balance. ‘ ‘That ewe had a lot of feminity,” he said. “She has a lot of breed characteris tics. She’s real straight in the hind and has a strong top. I think that, for an aged ewe, she still maintains a lot of excellent characteristics a real attribute at that particular age.” Very competitive Kuzemchak said that the ewe “would be very competitive” at shows. Several winners swept the awards, including Jenny Wenger, who competed against 27 other exhibits for the Dorset championship. Arlisa Snavely clinched the Shropshire breed class at the fair with her champion ewe yearling and her reserve ewe lamb. The Suffolk class included 62 entries and was by far the most popular breed of the show. Ryan Tracy picked up grand champion honors. The reserve went to Samantha Schildt. Market lambs The market lamb competition breeding sheep with his Hampshire ewe at the Elizabeth* town Fair. He is shown here with Dick Kuzemchak, Penn State shepherd, Judge, for the show. posed another type of challenge choosing what the market demands. “When you are talking market animal, you’re talking about mus cling,” said Kuzemchak. “We have to raise market lambs that have a lot of thickness in the right parts.” Champion animals have a lot of muscling from the last rib back. Judges are looking for a lot of length and width of loin, plenty of thickness to the lower leg, and proper finishing. “You want the animal to be balanced,” said Kuzemchak. The Reiffs were big winners in the market lamb class. Lyndon Reiff picked up reserve champion lightweight market lamb and champion and reserve heavy weight market lamb. Kendall Reiff won reserve medium weight as well as reserve overall champion of the market lambs. Lisa’s entry was picked champion medium weight market lamb and overall market lamb champion.
