DlB-Lancaster Farming Saturday, August 25,1990 GAIL STROCK Mifflin Co. Correspondent LEWISTOWN (Mifflin Co.)— With the excitement of fair week finally over, Mifflin Countians can take pride in another success ful fair year. Mifflin County extension agent Dave Filson said, “I think the most notable thing about this year’s fair is the increase (in participants) in almost everything - dairy, family living, livestock, etc.” At the livestock sale, Mifflin County’s 4-H and FFA youth sold 130 animals to 78 buyers who paid a total of $46,600, making this sale one of the most successful in recent years. Kish Veterinary Ser vice paid the highest price per pound ($4.50) for Jeremy Fisher’s grand champion lamb. Millers Family Restaurant paid $3,312.30 for Robin Brubaker’s 1,086-pound grand champion baby beef, the highest price per animal. The Belleville Livestock Market paid $809.20 for Adam Wert’s grand champion market hog. T. C. Daubert Trucking paid the difference to $l.OO for beef that sold under $ 1.00 per cwt. for a cost well over $6OO. A new feature at this year’s auc tion was the buy-back program, an old idea and one that has been a part of the farm show for many years, but a new one for auction goers this year. Through the buy back program, a meat packer pays for the animal at a predetermined price, the bidder pays the differ ence between the meal packers price and the bid price, and the 4-H or FFA member still receives the total amount of the bid. The buy-back program is a way for supporters to contribute to 4-H or FFA programs without taking any animals home. At the swine show, Adam Wert’s 238-pound market hog won grand champion after com- Berks Co. DHIA 1 Ayrshire 2 Guernsey 3 Holstein 4 Jersey June 1990 Rolling Herd Averages No. % Day* Mlk I.
