Farmers GAY N. BROWNLEE Somerset Co. Correspondent MEYERSDALE (Somerset Co.) You probably won’t find a Holstein dairy farmer who doesn’t enjoy time off from the job to watch and, perhaps, second guess, the expert judge as he works through a good dairy show in search of the finest udders and the most dairyness in the cows being paraded around a showring by their leader. Such was the case when the Somerset District Holstein Show was held at the Somerset County fairgrounds in Meyersdale last week. The dairy farming com munity watched more than 200 animals pass inspection by judge Lynn Miller of Towanda, Brad ford Co., owner of the Royal Haven Farm. Hungry folks kept up a steady stream to the concession stand where the Meyersdale volunteer firemen were fryin’ up the bur gers, hot dogs and french fries. The gals from the county dairy promotion committee were kept busy serving the thirsty with icy cold white and chocolate milk from the bulk dispenser. Babies were seen everywhere, being either strolled, carried or Route 30 West at the Centerville Exit backpacked. For the most part, concerned mothers and care givers kept them outside the arena, away from the constant dust. However, the evidence was clear; the progeny of farmers are healthy and thriving. The little ones are oriented into the farming lifestyle at the tender age of several weeks by hearing plenty of bovine bawl ing and mooing. " Some wives, tired from the hours of uncomfortable sitting on bleachers, opted to forego the satisfaction of seeing the grand champions named, and left early to take the younger children home, clean them and tuck them into bed. Dairy princess, Karen Jenkins, and her alternate, Jennifer Ringler, were kept busy bestowing the var ious ribbons, plaques, and trophies on the winners. But Jenkins didn’t hesitate to admit that she felt somewhat intimidated by the lar ger breed of cow. “I’m used to my X \ r, ft I I ****** . «*» ** ~ Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 28,1990-A37 little Jerseys,” says the petite princess, affectionately. “Going out in the ring was quite a shock er,” she laughs. But she certainly appeared to adapt well. PARTIAL LIST OF WINNERS: Junior Holier Calf 1 Bradley Reiman, 2. Joel Smiley, 3 Jill StuEman Intermediate Heifer Calf 1.
