A3O-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 28,1990 Farm Forum (Continued from Page A 10) the opportunity to go many places, meet many new people, and try many new things. If I had to describe my year in a few words, I would have to say it was an excit ing year of change. As I stand here on this stage tonight, I am a differ ent person than the girl that stood here fifty-three weeks ago. In that span of time, I have become a young woman who is able to think quickly, who is able to easily adapt to different situations, and perhaps most importantly, more aware of her own capabilities. Last year at the pageant, I was asked to respond the following question, “If asked to speak to a group of young people on how they can improve their world, what would you speak about, and what topics would you cover?” I said that I would stress the impor tance of developing their individu al talents to the fullest extent, and encourage them to use their spe cial abilities in all areas of their lives. I did, and still do belive that, but at the time, I was unaware of my own talents. During the last year, I had the chance and was sometimes even forced to try something different than what I was accustomed to doing. The end result was that I learned a lot about my own talents, and a lot about I started on the Fertrell Feeding Program just to prove it wouldn't work. "That's right. But I soon had to change my mind. You know, at first people would tell me that if it worked, everybody would be using it. I think the time will come when they will. For the past two years we've been on the Fertrell Feeding Pro gram, and during that time we've earned Pennsylvania's 'Dairy .of Distinction' Award, boosted our profit over feed costs to over Sl9OO per cow, and had one cow produce a 365- day record29,ooo lbs. of milk with 1,248 lbs. As a result of years of hard work, the dairy princesses before me have established a challenging standard for those that follow. I wondered if I could successfully continue the Dairy Princess tradi tion. There were also times during the year when I was disappointed or upset when a promotion did not work out as well as I had hoped. This was when my family and friends stepped in. I would like to thank them for telling me that I can do it, and I thank them for believing in me even if I doubted myself. It has truly been an exciting year. I am especially honored to have been able to represent Lan caster County. It really made me feel great, when I told people I was from Lancaster County, and I could see their eyes light up with recognition. It seems that being from Lancaster commands an even greater amount of respect. I like that! Now that my year as Lancaster County Dairy Princess has offi cially come to an end, I find that parting is a sweet sorrow. In many ways I am excited about putting my experiences to use in other Fertrell. However, part of me will always want to be the one to stand up when someone says, “We will now hear a few words from our Lancaster County Dairy Princess.” Angela Spickler Lancaster Co.
