JOSEPH, MO Young Angus exhibitors from 32 states displayed 526 head of cattle during the 1990 National Junior Angus Show held July 9-13 at Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha, Nebras ka. Judge Doug Hixon, Laramie, Wyoming, evaluated classes in the divisions of bred-and-owned heifers, “owned” heifers, bred-and-owned bulls, and cow-calf pairs. Scott Schaake, Lex ington, Kentucky, placed the 50 head of registered Angus steers. A native of Salmon, Idaho, Stephanie Nelson, paraded the grand champion among the 106 entries in the bred-and-owned heifer division. Also named the early junior champion, her entry is Nelson Jessica 9109, a January 1989 daughter of Grubbs MacKenzie. Nelson also captured the bred-and-owned reserve early junior heifer champion with another January 1989 daughter of Grubbs MacKenzie named Nelson Jessica 9106. These two winnings contributed to Nelson being named the high-point girl at the show. For this achievement, she was awarded a silver pitcher from the American Angus Auxiliary. Lindsay Swartz, Reßoy, Illinois, came home with two reserve grand championships from the largest junior Angus show of the year. She led out the reserve grand champion female in the bred-and-owned division. S&R Rosette 9301 first won the late junior champion for Swartz. The entry is a March 1989 daughter of R&J Lurch 303. In the bred-and-owned bull division, Swartz was also awarded the reserve grand champion banner for S&R Dantar 9407. The bull was also named the reserve junior champion and is an April 1989 son of Brest Dan Patch. Da Es Ro Casey 629 was judge Hixon’s pick of 29 entries for the grand champion bred-and-owned bull. Eric Schlutz, Letts, lowa, paraded the grand winner, an April 1989 son of Brost Power Drive. Scott Pohlman, Norfolk, Nebraska, showed the winning pair in the cow-calf category. Pohlmans Barbara 13487 and her April heifer calf by Brost Dan Patch topped the 21 entries. Ty Krebs, Gordon, Nebraska, led out the reserve grand champion cow-calf pair. His cow is Madam WK, and a May heifer calf by R&J Extraordinary walked by her side. Krebs also led his steer Box L Winchester 9060 to the grand champion spot in the steer division. Weighing 1,166 pounds, his February 1989 steer averaged 2.29 pounds of gain per day. He is sired by Winchester HK K 44. From Britton, South Dakota, Melissa Bush displayed the reserve grand champion steer. Sired by P J M Montana Power 516, Dakota Power 351 was judge Schaake’s reserve steer pick. The April 1989 steer weighed in at 1,151 pounds and averaged 2.56 pounds of gain per day. Among the 320 entries the “owned” heifer category, Lori Franklin, La Salle, Colorado, walked away with the grand champion laurels for her entry F F F Diablo-Suzie. Also selected the early junior champion, the January 1989 heifer is sired by S C R Lone Star 411. Beth Patton of Crawfordsville, Indiana, led her late junior champion heifer to the “owned” reserve grand championship. Patton’s April 1989 entry is also a daughter of S C R Lone Star 411 and is named Patton Beatrice 935. The champion group of five head went to the Indiana Junior Angus Association. For that honor the Indiana members received $lOO. Illinois won 475 for the second place group of five; Nebraska won $5O for third; and Kentucky placed fourth and won $25. Premier Angus Inc., Cloverdale, Indiana, was honored as the show’s Premier Breeder by breeding the three highest placing animals in the show. The Georgia Junior Angus Association won the best display for state groups with 15 head and under, and the Kentucky Angus members had the champion display for 16 head and over.
