David Kradel Herbert Jordan Milton Madison Penn State Poultry Pointers Herbert Siegel Donald Singleta; POULTRY HOUSE AIR QUALITY H. B. Manbeck Professor of Ag. Engineering Environmental air quality in poultry housing has traditionally been defined by air temperature and humidity and by ammonia (NH 3 ) levels. It has been assumed that dust levels in poultry houses will be satisfactory if adequate ventilation is provided to control temperature, humidity, and ammonia. D.W. OGG EQUIPMENT CO. The research was supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylva nia Agricultural Experiment Station. The researchers monitored air temperature, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and dust levels through out a commercial cage layer house during an entire laying cycle. Mea- TDC. Round Balers Only From Gehl TDC® —Total Density Control, is a patented "air-draulic" bale density system exclusively on Gehl round balers. This remarkably simple system allows you to vary bale density and core size to adapt to changing crop conditions giving you the flexibility you need to make quality round bales. Both the 1870 and 1470 feature texturized belts, constant velocity driveline, and the optional manual or Auto-Electric Twine-wrap. STOP BY FOR A DEMONSTRATION TODAY! Some of the more significant findings follow: • More than 97 percent of the particles in the house during hot or cold weather ventilation modes were respirable (smaller than 5 microns in diameter). That is, more than 97 percent of the particles are so small that they can enter the deep lung tissue of birds or humans. •w V) at In O u* • Mean daily dust levels in the house ranged from 19 to 191 parti- cles per milliliter. The dust levels' often exceeded recommended respirable dust exposure levels for humans in swine housing (48 particles/milliliter). Threshold levels for poultry housing are not yet established. • Mean dust levels were 1.5 to 2.3 times higher during hot weath er ventilation than during cold weather ventilation. This indicates that simply increasing ventilation rates does not effectively control dust levels. • There was little positive cor- ...for a full ydjr when you finance your Gehl equipment with our special 0% interest 12-month payment plan. This suggests that increasing ventilation rates to con trol air temperature and gas conta minant levels will not necessarily decrease dust levels. Dust control in poultry housing is becoming increasingly impor tant Increasing ventilation rates will not necessarily decrease dust levels, but may increase dust levels because of resuspension of small respirable dust particles. Producers must adopt practices to minimize the introduction of recirculated dust particles through Thoroughly Conditioned The Gehl 2140/2170 mower conditioners will thor oughly condition your hay. These pull-type mower conditioners are built for fast cutting, fast drying and worry-free performance. The wide, intermeshing rubber rolls with intermittent ribsgive you 35% more working edges than continuous-ribbed rolls, for more thorough conditioning. That means shorter drying time with less leaf damage. See your Gehl dealer today on how the 2140, with a 7 ft. cutting width, and the 2170 with a 9 ft. 3 in. cutting width, will fit into your haymaking operation. This is especially critical when several houses are close together. The poultry industry also needs to iden tify and adopt practices to reduce the generation of small dust parti cles from litter or feeding systems. Idenfitication and development of dust reducing practices should be a prime research thrust in the industry. In the meantime, toxic dust masks, chemical cartridge respirators with toxic dust prefil ters, or powered air purifying respirators should be used whenever personnel enter a poul try facility. MILK.
