EVERETT NEWSWANGER Managing Editor MANHEIM (Lancaster Co.) “Not too fat and not too lean.” That’s the way Jay Hess, 15, from the Penn Manor FFA Chapter discribed his grand champion gilt at the Lancaster County FFA hog show on Wednesday. Jay, the 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Abram Hess, Pequea, has been showing hogs for three years, but this was his first grand champion. Judge Henry Gruber liked the homebred crossbred with a redish tint well enough to place the entry at the top of the SO head show. Jay has more hogs at home. They will definitely show up at _ jg field. Tom Moyer represented the buyer. FFA Hog Show Features Top Quality Lampeter Fair and maybe at Solanco. Veteran show person Karen Becker of Manheim had the reserve champion with a crossbred barrow from Frank Feeser, Taney town, Maryland. Karen, the 16-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs Marlin Becker, has been showing hogs for eight years, with at least five grand champions including the grand champion at Harrisburg. A member of the Man heim FFA Chapter, Karen expects to show more hogs at the Eli zabethtown, Ephrata, and Man heim Fairs. In the sale following the- show, Hatfield Packing bought Jay’s champion for $1.50 per pound and White Oak Mills bought Karen’s • Gestatlng Sows • Boars reserve champion for $1.40 per pound. The show and sale were held for the first time at the Man heim Fairgrounds. Gehman’s Feed Mill and the Lancaster-Chester Swine Produc ers provided the trophies.
