Potato growers have been granted special permission by the federal Environ mental Protection Agency (EPA) to use a certain insecticide to battle potato beetles. According to a news release from the York County extension office, the EPA has given the state Department of Agriculture permis sion to allow the use of sodium fluoaluminate, also known as cryolite, to control Colorado pota to beetles on potatoes. According to the exemption order, “Use of the product Kryo cide ... or Prokil cryolite ... is authorized. All applicable precau tions, dirccuons and restrictions of the EPA-registered label must be followed. “These products will be applied at a maximum rate of 10 to 12 pounds of product per acre per application. “A maximum of two applica tions by ground or air equipment is authorized. The number of appli cations has been reduced to two in order to encourage use of regis tered alternatives particularly Bacillus thuringiensis in an inte grated pest management approach to controlling this pest. “No application will be made within three days of harvest. A maximum of 22,000 acres of pota toes may be treated. “Residue levels of flourine resulting from the ... applications are not expected to exceed a 5 ppm in or on potatoes and potatoe processed commodi ties. This Agency has determined that this level is adequate to protect public health.” According to John Rowehl, York County agricultural exten sion agent, recommendations for beetle control and suggested IPM strategies incorporating cryolite and Bt have been made by Dr. Zane Smilowitz.
