Dairy Princess Optimistic About Farm Future VERN HOCKENBERRY New York Correspondent ATHENS (Bradford Co.) Amy Allis of Heirickville, who is always at the front of the line, is the 1990 Bradford County Dairy Princess. Amy will long remem ber the warm, humid evening at Harlan Rowe Middle School in Athens, where she was selected. First alternate is Robin Thomas of Troy and second alternate is Teresa Brown of Leßaysville. Amy, 17, is the daughter of Dale and Eileen Allis and has an 11-year-old sister. The Allis’ milk 47 Holsteins. Amy helps with the farm work, on a part-time basis, doing all feeding at night She knows what a cow needs for feed. After high school, Amy is plan ning on college and a career in physical therapy; but the princess plans to keep in touch with her farming roots. When asked about the future of dairy fanning in ten years, Amy said, “Fanners will be better off economically. People are slowly changing their ideas of farming. The pageant will be held at the Dauphin County Agri cultural and Natural Resources Center at T:45 p.m. *** The family farm will be around a long time.” The first alternate, Robin Tho mas, is 18. She is the daughter of Richard and Virginia Thomas of Troy. She has an older brother and sister. Robin enjoys showing her cows, and is active in sports. Their Thomas Crest Farm, is a Penn sylvania Century Farm which has been in their family since 1803. As for the future of dairy farm ing, Robin remarked, *Tt will be very competitive. The dairy far mer will use the BST growth hor mone to stay in the industry. The future of our family farms depend on research and factors out of the farmers’ control.” The second alternate, Teresa Brown is the daugher of Willis and Jenelle Brown of Leßaysville. She is 16 and a junior at NE Brad ford High. Teresa plays flute in the band and is active in basketball and softball. Teresa plans to attend Williamsport Community College and study to be an executive sec retary. “There will always be family farms,” Teresa says. The Dairy Princess Pageant is sponsored by the Bradford County 'an/ Char Two teens, Tonya Scholl, Eli zabethville, and Donna Shetterly, Millersbuig, will compete for the dairy princess title. Tonya is the 17-year-old daughter of Fred and Linda Scholl. She has completed her junior year Dairy Promotion Association. The association president is Larry Brown of Windham. The Dairy Promotion Associa tion also promotes a Meet the Princess Candidates dinner, the yearly dairy festival, Troy Fair Milk-Shake Booth and provides funding for the Dairy Princess. A new project that is popular is Cow Coloring Contest for all third graders. The winner’s class, in each district, is treated to a milk and cookie party, with finals on Kids Day at the Tidy Fair. In addi tion each child receives a partici pation memento Bonnie Borek is the current chairperson for the dairy festival. Roger Madigan, Pennsylvania Senator, Bradford County resident and former dairy farmer was Mas ter of Cermonies and stagehand. Entertainment was provided by the Family of Friends, a local bluegrass group. Judges were Lol ly Long.
