By now I am sure you are aware the use of maneb type fungi
cides have been voluntarily cancelled by the manufacturers on cer
tain crops. Tobacco is one of the crops that no longer has label
clearance for the use of Dithane and Manzate products. Existing
farmer stocks can be used on tobacco, but you will not be able to
buy materials that have clearance for tobacco. For most growers,
this means Ridomil is the only labeled material to control blue
mold in tobacco. Ridomil is cleared for use as a pieplant treatment
(2 quarts per acre) and as a lay-by treatment (1 quart per acre) if at
least 1 quart was applied preplant. It is not cleared for application
to the tobacco plant after the last cultivation. Since we now have
no labeled materials to control blue mold later in the season, we
recommend ail growers use Ridomil. Although Ridomil is expen
sive, blue mold disease can quckly cause losses that will greatly
exceed the cost of Ridomil.
