DES MOINES, lowa The National Pork Producers Council will serve more than 13 tons of pork and ISO gallons of barbecue sauce to an estimated 100,000 vis itors at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines on June 2-4, 1990. In 1988, a similar effort earned the event the “Guiness Book of World Records’” official title for the “largest barbecue.” America’s pork producers hope to make pork the nation’s number one meat choice by the year 2000, according to the pork industry’s long-range plan. The National Pork Producers Council invites you to attend the World Pork Expo, June 2-4, 1990 at the lowa State Fairgrounds in De Moines, lA. ‘Ecofits’ Will Participate In State Envirothon CHAMBERSBURG (Franklin Co.) — On May 9,1990,12 teams of high school students from Franklin and Fulton Counties met at Cowans Gap State Park to test their environmental knowledge and skills. The event was the First Annual Franklin/Fulton Counties Envirothon. The Envirothon, sponsored by the Franklin and Fulton County Conservation Districts, is an annu al competition designed to test the students’ knowledge of the envi ronment. It is also designed to increase their awareness of the interrelationships that exist in the world and the effects of human actions on those interrelation ships. The competition revolved around the five environmental subject areas of aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and current envir onmental issues. Charles Kubasik, field rep resentative for DER Bureau of Soil and Water Conservation in Altoona, assisted with the current issues station. Also, Greg Sassa man from DER Bureau of State Parks conducted an educational only station. The subject of this year’s cur rent environmental issue station was wetlands. The test for the sta tion, as well as a packet of useful study materials, was prepared by the new Division of Rivers and Wetland Conservation in the DER Bureau of Water Resources. The “Ecofits,” a team com prised of science students from the James Buchanon High School, was the first-place team from Franklin County. Team members are James Meyers, Jason Hain baugh, Rock Sabetto, Lemar Long, and David Nagy. These stu dents will now represent Franklin County at the seventh annual Pen nsylvania State Envirothon at Bald Eagle State Park in Centre County on June 23, 1990. If the Franklin County Team “Ecofits” wins the Stale Envir othon, they will compete against Envirothon teams from other states at the Third Annual Nation al Envirothon to be held in Zanes ville, OH, in August.
