A22-Lancastsr Firming, Saturday, May 5,1990 COLLEGE PARK, Md. The Rhone-Poulenc Ag Company recently announced that it is vol untarily stopping the sale of the pesticide aldicarb (brand name Temik) for use on potatoes and is recalling all stocks of aldicarb pre viously sold for this use. The com pany will continue to sell aldicarb for other food and nonfood uses. Rhone-Poulenc officials took this action because of unexplained high residue levels they found in a few potatoes while conducting a study requested by the U.S. Envir onmental Protection Agency (EPA). Rhone-Poulenc scientists Penn West Issues MEADVILLE (Crawford Co.) Penn West Farm Credit, Agri cultural Credit Association, re- cently released year-end reports that its loan volume reached over $280.5 million compared to $259.2 million in 1988. Interest income and net income in 1989 was $29.4 million and $2.3 million, respectively. The association’s assets increased to $295.7 million at December 31, 1989, compared to $130.6 million at December 31, 1988. The increase is largely attribut able to an increase in loans out standing, in particular the pur chase of the long-term mortgage portfolio from the Farm Credit Bank of Baltimore. On December 31, the associa tion’s debt-to-capital ratio was 5.9 . to 1; permanent capital ratio was 14.3%; total capital was 15.2% of loans and 14.4% of total assets. The credit quality of the associ ation’s loan portfolio was 83% acceptable loans. Environmental conditions in 1989 were more favorable than those experienced in previous years, and the improved weather conditions had a positive impact on the cash flow of borrower operations in the association’s service area. According to Jeffrey M. Paige, chief financial officer, ‘The out look for 1990 is optimistic. Farm Credit’s posture is much stronger than in the past several years. Association personnel wjll have a stronger marketing position than they have enjoyed in several years and the outlook for the general economy continues to be optimis tic.” Rhone-Poulenc Stops Aldicarb Sale analyzed 100 potatoes from each of three fields treated with aldi carb in 1989. All the potatoes from two of the fields had residues below the legal tolerance of 1 part per million (ppm). In the third field, they found 10 potatoes with residues slightly above the toler ance and one potato with residues of 9 ppm. “Because these residues occurred as a result of a legal application according to label directions rather than as a result of misuse, Rhone-Poulenc decided to be extra cautious and withdraw Temik for use on potatoes while they conduct further studies,” Farm Credit Statement explains Amy E. Brown, pesticide coordinator for the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service (MCES). She adds that there is no need for consumers to stop eating pota toes or for food processors to change their processing practices. “Aldicarb has not been asso ciated with cancer or any chronic health effects,” said Brown. “It can cause some acute (immediate, short-term) problems, but no adverse health effects have been reported from proper use of aldi carb in the 17 years it has been used in crop production.” Residues of 9 ppm, the amount found by Rhone-Poulenc in one potato, could cause flu-like symp toms, possibly including nausea, blurred vision, and vomiting. But because only one out of the 300 potatoes analyzed had residues that high, consumers’ risk of getting sick from eating potatoes is extremely slight, according to Rick Tinsworth, head of the Special Review and Registration Division of EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs. And that risk can be reduced even further by home preparation techniques. “Although aldicarb is systemic, which means you can’t wash or peel it off,” Tinsworth said, “tradi tional cooking methods baking, boiling, frying reduce any residues by about 50 percent.” (Data on the effects of microwave cooking are not currently available.) Therefore, EPA is recommend ing that potato processors con tinue to accept potatoes already treated with aldicarb. This is good news for many Maryland growers who have already treated their fields this spring to prevent damage from the Colorado potato beetle. Still, because of possible public confu sion and controversy.
