016-Lancaster Farming Saturday, March 10,1990 Cash LYKENS (Dauphin Co.) The Dauphin Co. Fanners’ Asso ciation announced today that it is starting a petition-signing cam paign to encourage the State Gen eral Assembly to pass legislation leading to a deposit being placed on returnable beverage containers. “Each year farmers are faced with a major cleanup of bottles and cans along the roads and in their fields,” said Jon Johnson, president of the local farm group. “This carelessly discarded trash causes major damage to our equipment and can kill our farm animals.” Kicking off a campaign called “Cash’em, Don’t Trash’em”, the local association is participating in the statewide campaign that would let the general public vote on the issue in a statewide referendum. “We want to see a referendum placed on the ballot that would give direction to the Pennsylvania General Assembly, which would then hopefully pass legislation placing a deposit on returnable beverage containers,” Johnson said. The State General Assembly approved the Municipal Waste Planning Recycling and Waste Reduction Act (Act 101, 1988), which will require recycling for most municipalities within three years.
