822-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 27,1990 Fruit and Vegetable Conference Slated for Hershey An all-day irrigation short course will be part of the Fruit and Vegetable Conference and Trade Show in Hershey. The annual show, which attracts more than 1,000 fruit and vegetable growers from across the state will be held at the Hershey Lodge and Con vention Center from January 30 to February 1, 1990. More than 12 pesticide update training credits, required by the state for the re newal of certified pesticide appli cator licenses, will be given dur ing the meetings. The gathering is a joint event lhat includes the 1990 Pennsyl vania Vegetable Conference spon sored by the Pennsylvania Vegeta ble Growers Association and the Pennsylvania State University. Scheduled concurrently is the 131st annual meeting of the State Horticultural Association of Penn sylvania, the state fruit growers association. The State Horticultur al Societies of Maryland and New Jersey also meet in conjunction with their fellow fruit growers from Pennsylvania. The Vegetable conference pro gram will feature concurrent ses sions all three days and is expect ed to draw more than 600 people. Sessions on January 30 will cover processing and fresh-market pro duction methods including insect, disease, and weed control as well as marketing and post-harvest handling. Bedding plant produc tion and issues of food safety ses sions will be featured on January 31, along with sessions on general vegetable culture and the future outlook for fruits and vegetables. February 1 will be devoted to small fruit production and market ing topics. The irrigation short course will also be February 1. University specialists and in dustry representatives and grow ers, including 25 from out-of state, will present more than 45 talks during the sessions. More than 100 exhibitors, displaying the latest in equipment, supplies, pesticides and varieties for fruit and vegetable growers, will be present for the trade show. The conference is the most compre hensive educational program of fered for growers in the state. Registration is open to all inter ested persons and begins at 7:30 each morning in the main lobby of the Convention Center. Registra tion fees are $25 for three days and $l5 for one day. An additional $25 fee is required for the irriga tion short course.
