That’s how times have changed in the time that we’ve been doing this.” The group has two convection ovens, which enables them to bake 60 pies every 35 minutes. Although die sales proceeds go to March of Dimes, Heart Fund, Easter Seals, Crop Walk, church missions, and several retirement homes and for the employable retarded, the guild believe they are well paid for their efforts in other than monetary ways. “By working together we get to know each other, share problems and have fun. We know each other’s bad points as well as then good points and we’re closer because of it.” The guild hopes their pie baking tradition will continue, but they express concern that only retirees come out for the event. “Everyone else is too busy working,” Stuber said. But a young mother recently told her, “Hang in there a little while longer; we want to take over.” Stuber said, “That gives me hope that our tradition won’t die out. They’ll be others to take over.” Afterall what is Christmas with out helping others and without mince pic? —WE NEED TRADE-INS 1 Belarus i | TOY TRACTOR -$15.251 J I^^Oi^he p Farm MODEL HP CASH \I , Tire Service 250 31 $4,595 p ii Barn EauiD. PA. 17517 PH: N/ Ida’s Notebook Ida Bisser The Christmas season is a busy time but we can always manage to squeeze in one more activity if we really want to. So, last week I took a tour of eight bed and breakfast inns here in Lancaster County. I opted to travel by van rather than drive by myself and hunt places from Adamstown to Col umbia and Brickerville to Willow Street. The other eight people in the van were from Harrisburg, Malvern and Mechanicsburg. The various places we visited ranged from super elegant to just plain homey. Of course, the prices were congruent to the atmosphere. In some places a bathroom was shared and in others each had then own Jacuzzi. Some of the houses dated back to 1777 while others were recently built for the bed and breakfast trade. All of them were beautifully decorated for Christmas. The banisters were twined with evergreens and some trees had only Santas for ornament while others had only Holstein cows - what a variety of adorn ments. Music and decorations fit the decor of each inn. My favorite was a Swiss chalet built recently which overlooked Speedwell Forge Lake. Here they featured traditions still practiced in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In the six hours of our trip we consumed a lot of hot cider and many Christmas cookies. In fact when I arrived home at eight p.m. I could almost forget that I had not eaten any supper. It was a pleasant interlude between addressing Christmas cards and decorating our house for guests.
