Awards were presented, direc tors elected, and the members teamed of plans for reorganization of the Pennsylvania Dairy Herd Improvement Association held Thursday, December 7,1989, at 7 p.m. in the' fireball in Harney, Maryland. Wayne Rodgers of Biglerville, president, presided at the meeting which was attended by 120 dairy family members and supporting agri-business personnel. A total of 47 herds with 3,719 cows completed production test ing programs supervised by the association during the year which ended Sept. 30. County produc tion averaged 16,270 pounds of milk, 617 pounds of butterfat and 523 pounds of protein ppr cow for the year. Donald Messinger, New Ox ford; Janet L. Hantz, New Oxford; Josie Hess, Gettysburg and Bar bara Fisher, Hanover served as DHIA Supervisors during the year. Awards in the form of plaques were presented to the following: First place for high herd, Leroy Deputy. East Berlin, for 20,450 pounds of milk, 782 pounds of butterfat average from 118 cows; second place to Robert and Kara Cunningham, Gardners for 18,858 pounds of milk, 766 pounds of butterfat average from 45 cows;' third place to Penn Gate Farms, Littlestown, with 18,905 pounds of milk, 765 pounds of butterfat from 67 cows. Recognition for top production in one 305-day lactation for both milk and butterfat went to Penn Gate Farm: milk honors were earned by their C.P. Abby cow for production of 31,723 pounds; but terfat production of 1,357 pounds by a cow identified as “85.” Penn Gate had six in the top ten cows for individual milk records, seven DHIA Presents Awards among the top ten in butterfat pro duction. High lifetime production hon ors were shared by Leroy Deputy with 222,230 pounds of milk in 10 lactations by “Phyllis” and the Yellow-Buttercup Farm of Larry and Yvonne Mummert at East Berlin whose cow “29” produced 8,749 pounds in 10 lactations. Honors for greatest improve ment in the past year went to Jef frey and Mary Kay Roche of New Oxford. Their herd average for butterfat showed an increase of 142 pounds over their 1988 pro duction level. Garrity and Smith outlined the schedule of events which is to bring about centralized control of the dairy herd improvement pro gram in Pennsylvania. The result should be more uniform treatment for the local supervisors and more efficient service to members. “Four counties have already opted for central control and manage ment, another six are ready to make the change," said Garrity. He announced that local members will have a voice in this decision which will be made at a future membership meeting. County Agent Thomas E. Piper presented the records summary which included some key results from recent studies and several tri als of bovine somatotrophin (BST) for dairy cows. Currently waiting FDA approval for com mercial use, BST has been shown to increase milk production per cow by as much as 40 percent, with an average response of 10-20 percent. In the election of directors, en cumbents Jeffrey King and Alan Zepp were re-elected. Sam Stoner of East Berlin was elected to re place Daniel Leer of York Springs.
