The 38th Annual Convention of the Berks County Farm Women was held at the Berks County Agricultural Center, with 140 members and guests present. The convention was called to order by Berks County president, Janet Schlegel. Officers were installed by Edith Diehl, state president. Good food, door prizes and reports of the year’s activities were all part of the day’s events. Seven teen members were present and mantioned their special winter project as they responded to roll call. The special speaker was Elea nor O’Neill, member of the Hos pice Speakers Bureau. Several cartons of food were presented to the Food Bank. Hostesses were Grace Heilbron, Mary Grace Martin, Ruth Eby and Molly Baer. The next meeting will be held at the home of Vemetta Wallahder on November 8 at 1:30 p.m. She will present slides of a trip to Israel. A cookie exchange, with accompanying recipes, is planned also. After being harvested and crushed, the grapes go to the tanks for fermenting, a process that takes one month or years depending on the wine. The Caplans have turned the actual wine making over to Owen Smith, a wine maker with a degree in enology (wine making) from California State at Fresno. Part of his duties include testing the wine during its processing for alcohol content, tot al acidity, pH, and sugar content. Some day the Caplans expect to produce 14,000 gallons of wine from the grapes they grow. When they get to the point where they need more grapes, they hope to be able buy them from area growers. “We’re trying to encourage local growers to raise wine grapes,” said Richard. “It’s a labor-intensive crop, but not back-breaking and you could make $3,500 or $4,500 per acre.” The Caplans and Smith expect their first wines to be ready in the spring.
