4 Amy Eshelman received both the top showman and top fitter honors with her sheep at the Berks County 4-H lamb roundup BY VAL VAN TASSEL Berks Co. Correspondent READING, (Berks Co.) A hard, cold rain and winds gusting between 25 and 30 miles an hour didn’t seem to bother the hardy buyers at the Berks County 4-H market lamb sale held late last month at the Reading Fair grounds. Despite the uncomfort able conditions, bidding was brisk for the grand champion market lamb owned by Travis Werley of Shoemakersville. The 131-pound Suffolk finally was purchased by King’s IGA for a whopping $6.50 a pound. Leaving the tent more than $BOO richer than when he entered, Werley was very pleased with the day’s evhhts. *Tm going to put it toward a truck,” he .explained. •’ • } Alice Strause of Hamburg had the reserve champion, a 114,-pound Hampshire that had been sheeted as the middleweight champion. A number of buyers bid on the reserve and Auctioneer John Fry of Ephrata skillfully marched the price up to S6.SO per pound for the second time that day. Kuzan’s Hardware Store of Shoemakersville finally got the animal for $741. Strause, who has only been raising sheep for two years, decided to purchase more lambs with her windfall. Valerie Hunter exhibited the champion pair, which included the third heavy middleweight and the reserve champion heavyweight. Despite a combined weight of 232 pounds, Hunter received $4.25 per pound for the pair from Shilling ton IGA. “I think I’ll put some Valerie Hunter of Fleetwood exhibited the top pair of market lambs at the 4-H roundup with the help of Randy Sut liff, left. Hunt er, one of the county’s 4-H sheep leaders, was impressed by the sale. “The weather was terrible but the prices were fantastic,” he said. Ftices stayed firm throughout the sale despite ever worsening weather conditions. The average price per pound excluding the champions was a fine $1.30. This was over twice the buy back price of $.60. A total of 32 lambs were sold. In other sheep news, market lamb and breeding sheep shows were held during the Reading Fair prior to tht Sale.
