Pennsylvania Recognized For Farm Preservation Work
HARRISBURG Pennsylva ;
nia was honored last month by the
American Farmland Trust for its
efforts in farmland preservation,
according to state Rep. Samuel
Morris, D-Chcster, chairman of
the House Agriculture and Rural
Affairs Committee.
The award, given in Washing
ton, D.C., recognizes Pennsylva
nia as a national leader in the drive
to protect farms from being deve
loped into commercial or residen
tial properties.
Accepting the Public Policy and
Program Award to the state was
Gov. Robert P. Casey. Separate
awards also were presented to

headed the program.
In making these awards, AFT
noted; “State Representative
Samuel Morris and State Senator
Noah Wenger took the lead in
gathering bipartisan support for
this program.”
The Pennsylvania Farmers
Assocation and AFT also gave
strong and active support to the
1987 referendum campaign,
which resulted in voters over
whelmingly approving a $lOO
million bond issue to finance the
program.

can sell the development rights to
their land to the counties or the
state. In doing so, the land cannot
be used for any other uses other
than agricultural.
Chester County is one of the
state’s leaders in implementing
this program on the local level.
“I’m very pleased this program
was recognized-by AFT,” Morris
said. “It’s an important program
that will help us preserve much of
the beautiful and bountiful farm
land in, Pennsylvania.”
The idea for the program came
in the early 1980 s after it was
learned that more than 90,000
acres of farmland was being lost
