A3B-Lancmtr Firming, Saturday, September 23,1989 Mars Tony Day Celebrated At Solanco Holstein Show BY PAT PURCELL QUARRYVILLE (Lancaster Co.) “Mars Tony Day” at the Solanco Fair was Thursday. There were no cartoonish characters roaming the fairgrounds dressed in green tights with a huge “T”,across their chests. Mars Tony is not an amusement ride added to the fair. Mars Tony was the star of the Holstein Dairy Show. Tony sired four of the cows pulled into the ring for the selection of the grand champion. ‘Tve never had much luck with Mars Tony,” said show judge James McCaffree, a Holstein breeder from York County, “but apparently there are a lot of breed ers who have done well with this sire.” McCaffree pulled the top two aged cows into the ring along with the first-placed 4-year-old and 2-year-old. McCaffree awarded the grand championship to the aged cow, a Welk-Shade Holstein, owned by Mark Welk. Donald Hostetter was the breeder on Maplebound Tony Darla. The second-placed aged cow owned by Welk Acres edged the grand champion in the aged class by taking best udder. Impatiens Mars Starbright, topped the champion in udder balance, sym metry and capacity, but could not over come the tremendous body of the winner. The aged cow class was deep in quality and the top placings were close. In judging the class McCaffree said, “I am impressed with the good cows in this class all the way down the line. There’s a lot of quality and dairyness throughout the class. I’ve selected this tall cotf for her depth of heart and depth and spring of rib. But I must give best udder to the second-placed cow.” Reserve grand champion went to the first placed 4-year-old, own ed by Paul Welk of Welk-Crest Holstein. Welk-Crest Tony Amber also bred by Paul Welk was described by McCaffrce as the most well-balanced individual. This winner exhibited the most style and balance in a class with several very fine animals at the top. “She has the levelness of udder I like to see with the most desirable teat placement, I like the dairyness and strength of this 4-year-old,” said McCaffree. James Welk, a junior showman, also took that walk into the center of the ring for the grand champion selection of the open show with the daughter of his first 4-H project. Karen Kauffman took reserve grand championship in the junior division and also the junior champ ionship title with her stylish junior yearling, Sukavin Starbuck Jessi ca, sited by Hanover Hill Starbuck. “This is a real easy winner. She just floats to the top of the class. She is long, tall and streamlined with very, very correct hind legs. We all have to admire her style,” said McCaffree. Karen is owner-breeder on this fine young animal which has been winning in every show. Jessica’s most recent win was at the Fall Champion Holstein Show held in State College two weeks ago. Jes sica captured the junior champion ship there in what was described as one of the finest quality shows held there in the past several years. Reserve junior champion went to, Nathan Kreider’s senior calf. Long-Valley Camaro Krystle owned and bred by S & A Kreider & Sons Inc. “This white heifer may not be the tallest in the class,” said McCaffree, “but she is the most balanced heifer in the class. I like her depth of rib. sharpness in the shoulders and her balance and style throughout.” Solanco Fair dairy bams are bulging. This year’s show entries in both the Colored Breed show and the Holstein show were up and alarmingly close to capacity. The 1989 Holstein brought together 112 competitors from the southern end of the county. HOLSTEIN (Open & Youth) Junior Calf 1 Matthew Kolb; 2 James Kreider, 3.
