Angus Cattle Dominate
BY JOYCE BUPP
York Co. Correspondent
YORK (York CO.) Jennifer
Calderazzo notched another
accomplishment in her 4-H beef
exhibiting career, claiming the
grand champion market steer hon
ors at the York Fair.
Though the York teenager has
gathered numerous ribbons for
exhibiting the Dr. Joseph Calder
azzo family’s GH2 homebred
Angus, this was the first win of the
top place in the hotly contested
market steer classes. Jennifer pur
chased the 1,220-pound Montana,
named for noted football player
Joe Montana, from the family’s
Angus breeding operation for use
as her project steer. The purebred
topped his light heavyweight class
prior to claiming the champion
title.
Taking the reser vhampion hon
ors with her heavyweight division
winner was 16-year-old Robin
Shive. Her entry was a homebred,
1,295-pound Angus, dubbed Balki
after a character on a favorite tele
vision show of the Seven Valley’s
4-H member. Robin is the daught
er of Gordon and Dianna Shive and
a 4-H beef exhibitor for eight
years.
Some three dozen 4-H beef club
members took part in the York
Fair’s popular market steer show
with champions named in four
weight categories. Heading up the
lightweight division were Jason
Baer of Glen Rock with the
champion and Ed Livingston of
Dover with the reserve champion.
Jason Baer snagged a second
championship rosette in the
mediumweight class, topping the
reserve owned by Shawn Walti
myer of Airville. In the reserve
light heavyweight class, behind
Calderazzo’s grand champion,
was Kerri Kohr’s steer. Robin
Shive topped the heavyweight
division with Susan Eisenhour of
Wellsville taking the reserve spot.
4-H beef breeding
Sandy Eisenhour’s open class
supreme champion female handil
ty took top honors in the 4-H beef
breeding Angus division, as well.
The 17-year-old Wellsville exhibi
tor’s March, 1988, heifer bested
the reserve cyhampion Angus
female exhibited by Robin Shive.
Siblings Matthew and Jennifer
Altobelli of Dover shared top hon
ors in the Hereford division. The
pair exhibited March, 1988, sisters
by Top Priority.
Matthew, 10, took his first
champion honors in this, his sec
ond year of 4-H showring competi
tion. Jennifer, 12, is a third-year
4-H’er. They are the children of
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Altobelli.
A Seven Valleys brother-sister
duo topped the Simmental divi
sion. Joyce Stough’s late junior
yearling heifer claimed the champ
ionship over Jay’s junior yearling
entry.

she went on to capture the 4-H beef
showman championship.
The daughter of Jim and Brenda
Eisenhour, Sandy has been lending
a hand at beef shows since she was
a youngster.
Reserve champion showman
was Jennifer Calderazzo of York.
In addition to her own 4-H ani
mals, Jennifer assists in showing
the family’s GH2 Angus herd
entries at numerous shows.
Also placing first in their show
maship age categories were,
Suzanne Bishard of York and
Matthew Altobelli.
Suzanne Bishard also was
named fitting champion at the fair,
her first win of the honor in four
years of 4-H competition.
In preparation, the 12-year-old
has been brushing her steer almost
every day, training the hair of the
coat to lay properly and stand up
along the top line. Suzanne does all
her own fitting, from initial wash
ings to teasing the tail into the
familiar ball shape. She is the
daughter of Brad and Lois Bishard
of Seven Valleys.
The reserve fitting champion
was Jennifer Altobelli. In sepa
rate, special fitting classes, three
4-H’ers took age division honors.
