Jennifer Calderazzo notched another accomplishment in her 4-H beef exhibiting career, claiming the grand champion market steer hon ors at the York Fair. Though the York teenager has gathered numerous ribbons for exhibiting the Dr. Joseph Calder azzo family’s GH2 homebred Angus, this was the first win of the top place in the hotly contested market steer classes. Jennifer pur chased the 1,220-pound Montana, named for noted football player Joe Montana, from the family’s Angus breeding operation for use as her project steer. The purebred topped his light heavyweight class prior to claiming the champion title. Taking the reser vhampion hon ors with her heavyweight division winner was 16-year-old Robin Shive. Her entry was a homebred, 1,295-pound Angus, dubbed Balki after a character on a favorite tele vision show of the Seven Valley’s 4-H member. Robin is the daught er of Gordon and Dianna Shive and a 4-H beef exhibitor for eight years. Some three dozen 4-H beef club members took part in the York Fair’s popular market steer show with champions named in four weight categories. Heading up the lightweight division were Jason Baer of Glen Rock with the champion and Ed Livingston of Dover with the reserve champion. Jason Baer snagged a second championship rosette in the mediumweight class, topping the reserve owned by Shawn Walti myer of Airville. In the reserve light heavyweight class, behind Calderazzo’s grand champion, was Kerri Kohr’s steer. Robin Shive topped the heavyweight division with Susan Eisenhour of Wellsville taking the reserve spot. 4-H beef breeding Sandy Eisenhour’s open class supreme champion female handil ty took top honors in the 4-H beef breeding Angus division, as well. The 17-year-old Wellsville exhibi tor’s March, 1988, heifer bested the reserve cyhampion Angus female exhibited by Robin Shive. Siblings Matthew and Jennifer Altobelli of Dover shared top hon ors in the Hereford division. The pair exhibited March, 1988, sisters by Top Priority. Matthew, 10, took his first champion honors in this, his sec ond year of 4-H showring competi tion. Jennifer, 12, is a third-year 4-H’er. They are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Altobelli. A Seven Valleys brother-sister duo topped the Simmental divi sion. Joyce Stough’s late junior yearling heifer claimed the champ ionship over Jay’s junior yearling entry. Showmanship, fitting This year’s York Fair was a win ning one for Sandy Eisenhour as BY JOYCE BUPP York Co. Correspondent YORK (York Co.) Black proved to be both beautiful and judge pleasing at the York Fair’s open class beef competition, with Angus winners taking both supreme champion honors. The supreme champion female banner went to 17-year-old Sandy Eisenhour for her March Angus junior yearling heifer. The Wells ville 4-H’er is the daughter of James and Brenda Eisenhour and has been exhibiting beef cattle jrazzo v Fair’s 4-H market steer show with her Angus purebred, Montana. The reserve champion 4-H market steer was Balki, the Angus homebred exhibited by Robin Shive. she went on to capture the 4-H beef showman championship. The daughter of Jim and Brenda Eisenhour, Sandy has been lending a hand at beef shows since she was a youngster. Reserve champion showman was Jennifer Calderazzo of York. In addition to her own 4-H ani mals, Jennifer assists in showing the family’s GH2 Angus herd entries at numerous shows. Also placing first in their show maship age categories were, Suzanne Bishard of York and Matthew Altobelli. Suzanne Bishard also was named fitting champion at the fair, her first win of the honor in four years of 4-H competition. In preparation, the 12-year-old has been brushing her steer almost every day, training the hair of the coat to lay properly and stand up along the top line. Suzanne does all her own fitting, from initial wash ings to teasing the tail into the familiar ball shape. She is the daughter of Brad and Lois Bishard of Seven Valleys. The reserve fitting champion was Jennifer Altobelli. In sepa rate, special fitting classes, three 4-H’ers took age division honors. Sandy Eisenhour was the senior Black Beauties Win York Fair Supreme Beef Titles throughout her 4-H career. The winner took top honors in the Angus division, then topped a half-dozen other breed contenders for the coveted award on a nod’ from Connecticut beef breeder Jim Hough, who judged the day-long breeding beef contests. The heifer was purchased by Sandy as a calf from Angus breed er Tom Brass’s T&J Farm in Big Mount. Shown earlier this year at the Farni Show, the heifer had topped her class. Her supreme ban ner was the first such ever won by York 4-H winner, Jason Stein of Wrightsvil le was the junior winner, and Phil ip Baer of Brodbecks was the roo kie winner.
