Keith & Edward Martin, Loysville
Keith and Edward Martin are a brother team who work in partnership
on Merrimart Farms. The partnership began in 1973 with their father, Wil
liam, and Just last year the brothers began buying him out. Ed takes care
of crop management, machinery maintenance and feeding, while Keith Is
the herdsman and finance man.
The operation consists of three farms, one of which is owned by Wil
liam and houses the calves. The 170-head registered Holstein milking
herd is on the main farm; older heifers and about 50 to 60 head of market
steers are on the other.
The Martins farm 390 acres, rent another 200 acres, and have 110 acres
in pasture and mostly woodland. Last summer, when they built onto a
barn so they could expand the herd, they opened it for more ventilation.
Curtains that unhook at the top and roll down were installed above
hinged doors that open out for additional air flow.
