Kevin Burleigh, R.D. #1 Pleasant Mount, had the lead
ing dairy herd in the Wayne County Dairy Herd Improve
ment Association for the month of April, according to the
Cooperative Extension Service. The herd of 43 Holsteins
had a rolling herd average of 20,635 pounds of milk and
776 pounds of butterfat.
Other top herds were: Rowe Brothers, #2 Honesdale,
19,352 milk and 771 fat; Gary Fielding, #5 Lake Ariel,
20,382 milk and 753 fat; Charles P. Dennis, #2 Honesdale,
19,880 milk and 728 fat; Highland Farms, St. Rt. Hones
dale, 19,648 milk and 711 fat; Jack & Ella Chyle, Pleasant
Mount, 20,174 milk and 703 fat; A&M Spangenberg, Star
rucca, 18,709 milk and 700 fat; Dave Noble, #4 Hones
dale, 20,295 milk and 693 fat; George Banicky, #2 Thomp
son, 18,545 milk and 681 fat; and David Petrosky, St. Rt.
Honesdale, 18,793 milk and 681 fat.
The cow completing the highest lactation of 305 days or
less during the month of April was a five year old Holstein
owned by A&M Spangenberg, Starrucca. “Zulu* produced
24,481 pounds of milk and 934 pounds of butterfat.
Other top producers were "Gaudy* owned by A&M
Spangenberg, 24,091 milk and 901 fat; "Poloma* owned
by E.W. Lepro, #2 Thompson, 25,576 milk and 869 fat;
"98* owned by Gary & Jean Eisenhauer, Honesdale
20,508 milk and 826 fat; "Libby* owned by Rowe Brothers,
#2 Honesdale, 19,772 milk and 813 fat; "Shannon* owned
by Carl Shepstone, Damascus, 24,388 milk and 811 fat;
“Faith* owned by Highland Farms, St. Rt. Honesdale,
18,562 milk and 809 fat; “Joyce* owned by Carl Shep
stone, Damascus, 22,044 milk and 807 fat; “Star* owned
by Highland Farms, 22,254 milk and 794 fat and “Belle*
owned by Karl Eisenhauer & Son, Lakeville, 17,065 milk
and 792 fat.
