A3B-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 22,1989 UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre) Last year, more than 8,000 Pennsylvanians were involved in serious injuries on farms, say the results of-a survey done by Dr. Dennis Murphy, assistant profes sor on agricultural engineering. Yearly estimates of these acci dents are that a few hundred result in seriously disabling injuries. And about 40 people die. To help rescue services cope effectively with agricultural acci dents, the Penn State College of Agriculture and the Department of Agricultural Engineering are sponsoring an Agricultural Acci dents and Rescue program to be held at the University Park cam pus during the weekends of May 20-21 and June 3-4. “Agricultural rescue is a very specialized area of rescue because of the machinery and the structures on the farm,” says Murphy. The Penn State program is one of the few prog rams that cover this specialized area. Murphy points out that this is the only program that offers certi fication by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. All participants are expected to have previous rescue and emergency care training and experience. Murphy encourages attendance by “anyone who ser vices a rural area, including ambu lance services and fire fighters who provide rescue service. Even dispatch personnel would learn about preplanning and what ques tions to ask.” Jerry Jesperson, certified agri cultural accident and rescue instructor, will be the chief instructor. Other rescue instruc tors who have been involved in the development of the program also will participate. The program will cover instruction in 12 topic areas, including operating tractors and tractor overturns; manure storage, grain bins, and silos; and com bines, silage wagons and hay baling. Participants will receive both classroom instruction, with video Enters Sire Program TUNKHANNOCK (Wyoming) A young Holstein bull bred by Pen-Col Farms, Millville, Penn sylvannia was recently selected to enter the GOLD Sire Develop ment Program at Sire Power, Inc.
