■I ny»«w Fanning, Saturday, April 15,1989 CQrl It’s warming up and many of us are returning to the great outdoors. For some, it is the great beckoning of lawn and garden activities that call us to venture outside and work. My mother always had a saying that the yard had to be raked and cleared of winter debris by Easter so that the Easter bunny would come. Well, this year that meant getting an early start. One other job that often comes with the spring and summer out door work is applying pesticides. And whether you are just “dusting the garden" using some slightly toxic pesticides such as Captan or Sevin or “spraying the farm fields" using some more highly concen trated and toxic pesticides such as Paraquat or Furadan, you need to be aware of taking precautions for you and your family members. Wearing the proper type of clo thing while applying pesticides can help prevent accidental poi soning to home users. You may not be aware that poisoning most often results from pesticides entering the body through the skin rather than through the lungs or digestive tract. Symptoms of poisoning may range from headaches and vomit ing to unconsciousness and death. You can minimize the dangers of pesticide exposure by wearing clo thing that covers and protects your body, even when you are just “dusting" the garden. Select clothing that is made of tightly woven material, or as an alternative, durable disposable coveralls made of a non-woven material. Select unlined waterproof gloves that reach at least halfway to the elbow. Do not use the usual cotton gardening gloves as they will absorb the pesticides. Another precaution; avoid wearing a wrist watch with a leath er band or any type of jewelry made of leather. The reason is that once leatho* has been contami nated, it cannot be decontami nated. You might consider having one set of clothing to use only while applying pesticides. If possible, remove contaminated clothing outdoors or in an entry. If a granu lar pesticide has been used, shake clothing outdoors and empty pock ets and cuffs. Even if you are not responsible for the pesticide application at your home, you may be in charge of laundering the clothing. The laundering of pesticide contami nated clothing raises many ques tions. What is the best method? What water temperature should be used? What about contamination of the rest of the family laundry? The pesticide container label is a guide for learning the toxicity of the chemical. These may vary from words of Caution (slightly toxic) to Warning (moderately tox ic) to Danger Poison (highly toxic cbncentrated). Pre-rinse contaminated clothing in the washing machine to help remove pesticide particles from the fabric. Clothing worn while using slightly toxic pesticide may be effectively laundered in one machine washing. It is strongly recommended that at least three washing be used on clothing conta minated with more toxic pesti cides. Wear rubber gloves when handling contaminated clothing to prevent pesticide absorption into your body. The hotter the water tempera ture, the better. Washing in hot water (120 F to 140 F) removes more pesticide than cool water temperatures. Research has shown that heavy duty liquid detergents are more effective than other deter gents in removing more concen trated pesticides. Wash ofily one or two garments in a single load using a full water level to allow the water to thoroughly flush the fabric. And it is better to wash contaminated Centerville Exit. clothing ifhmedlately rather than allowing them to “set“ on the fabric. It is a good idea to rinse the washing machine after laundering pesticide contaminated clothing by running a wash cycle without clothing in the machine. Also, line drying is recommended to elimi nate the possibility of residues col lecting in the dryer, although heat from an automatic dryer can create additional chemical breakdown of pesticide residues. This may sound like a lot of extra steps, but these procedures are just a few adjustments to your current methods that will help protect you and your family.
