D3O-Lancaster Farming Saturday, AprH 8,1989 UNIVERSITY PARK (Center) Six students in Penn State’s College of Agriculture received cash awards for their winning pre sentations in the annual Guldin Speaking contest at Penn State fa March. The first prize went to Rebecca A. Sonnen, daughter of Paul M. and Marilyn F. Sonnen of Rich land. Her presentation, “Beyond His Wildest Dreams,” was about George Washington’s prediction that agriculture would continue to present unlimited possiblities to America. As examples, she dis cussed the transition fiom “hay burning” horses to tractors and the promising role of animal and plant biotechnology. Rebecca is a fresh man majoring in dairy production. The second prize went to Ross Pifer, son of Lois Pifer of Punxsu tawney. His presentation, “Water Rights,” focused on the history of water rights and the legal, ecologi cal, and economic implications of how water is owned and allocated. Pifer is a junior majoring in agri cultural business management. Third place went to Thomas S. Kapinus, son of Cy and Joan Kapi nus of Centre Hill, and Eric Dun can, son of Gary K. and Carolyn L. Duncan of Shrewsbury. The title of Kapinus’ address was “The Future of Agriculture.” He spoke about local,.national, and interna tional aspects of agricultural trade and the implication of innovations to agricultural production. Lisa Overly, daughter of Tom and Hedy Overly of Littlestown, took sixth place with a speech on the pros and cons of food imita tion.
