DB-Lancaster Farming Saturday, February 25,1989 Crawford County Crops Day Recognizes Three Farmers MEADVILLE (Crawford) One of the highlights of the 21st Annual Crawford County Com and Forage Day program was the recognition and awarding of plaques to three county farmers who participated in the Pennsylva nia Five Acre Com Club or the Pennsylvania Alfalfa Growers’ Program. Don Hart, Cochranton, pro duced 129.6 bushels of ear com per acre of Doebler’s 65X variety with a plant population of 19,446 plants per acre. Jeff Peters, Meadville, had an alfalfa yeild of 5.4 tons per acre on four cuttings of Centurion variety alfalfa seeded in March, 1987. The crude protein of the hay ranged from 16.6 percent to 21.9 percent with a TDN range 56.4 percent to 59.9 pfercent. This year’s average cost of pro ducing an acre of corn was $275.22 or $2.12 per bushel. Pro duction cost of alfalfa crop aver aged $282.34 per acre including both the annual cost and establish ment cost. Many local fanners took advan tage of the free health screeing services offered by the Meadville Medical Center, which was avail able all day long. Those in atten dance were pleased to have this service available. A total of five credits in update pesticide training was awarded to those growers in attendance who hold pesticide applicator permits.
