Jordan Associate Professor Of Poultry Sciences Why do egg laying pullets or hens peck at or eat their own eggs? Abnormal say most poultrymen, normal says the female doing it. It could be a normal reaction to ■boredom but an abnormal condition. Most specialists will tell you this behavioral disorder is not eas ily understood. To prevent cracked or broken eggs from females that peck at them, consider the following; l.> Use a roll-out nest or cage where egg is moved by gravity out of reach of the bird. 2. Darken nest or roll-out tray so egg is not seen by the bird. 3. Select only healthy birds from a breeder with a history of shells on eggs that do not break or crack easily. Any bird will eat an egg once broken. 4.> Gather eggs and remove them from the laying house con stantly, frequently or at least three times a day. Repair roll-out trays that break eggs because they are so steep which causes eggs to roll too fast or stop too abruptly. 8. Install nests, cages, roll-out trays, gathering belts, elevators, orientor trays so as not to break eggs because broken eggs have an odor that brings any egg eating animal to it. 9.> Instruct people not to allow broken eggs in the presence of birds. 10.> Provide an adequate envi ronment for layers. ll.>Feed layers an adequate diet. 12. Provide adequate fresh, clean, unpolluted water for layers. 13.
