Grand champion Slmmental heifer went to MF Miss CPS XIO exhibited by Mike Messick of Dauphin County. HARRISBURG (Dauphin) Wayne and Pat Hindman of Oak Hills Simmental Farm in Butler have won, in addition to many other awards, the Simmental Grand Champion Bull and Reserve Champion Heifer at the 73rd Pennsylvania State Farm Show. They are full time farmers who raise “seed stock” for breeding purposes. The bull that took top honors also took grand champion at the Keystone International Classic. At less than two years old he already weighs in at an impressive 2200 pounds and his handler describes him as “very correct” in build. Simmentals have only been in this country since 1969. They ori ginated in the Semi Valley Switz erland. They are “very big, but very gentle”. Simmentals are used for cross breeding with other beef cattle strains to increase bulk and easier weight gain. Perennial Farm Show winner Mike Messick of Dauphin County is at it again... but not in baby beef class where we are accustomed to seeing him. Mike exhibited the grand champion Simmental heifer in open beef judging competition at the 1989 Farm Show. His 928-pound purebred Simmental, “MF Miss CPS XB,” was selected the best in a class of 20 March heifers and the champion heifer calf. Mike exhibited the reserve champion heifer calf and reserve champion bull calf. All three ani mals were led into the show ring Grand champion Slmmontal bull was shown by Sara Mes slck and owned by Oak Hills Farm and M & M Farm. The champion, M&MS Gold Exchange was selected by show judge Dr. Ron BolzeJ Oak Hills Simmentals Another Champion For Messick by his sister Sally, a junior at Shippcnsburg University. Eighteen-year-old Mike, a member of the Dauphin County 4-H, had a 4-H steer for the 1989 junior beef steer class being judged. But it got too heavy for this year’s show, so he decided to concentrate his efforts on his Sim mcntal breeding cattle and appa rently, it paid off. Mike has one more chance next year to show the grand champion steer. Messick exhibited the 1986 champion steer, “Andy,” which brought $9.10 a pound, and the 1987 champion steer, “Elmer,” which earned him $7.75 per pound. His 1988 reserve champ ion named “Alex” brought $8.50 per pound. None of those prices were records, but Mike’s back-to back appearances in the winner’s circle will certainly go down in history! He currently attends the Harris burg Area Community College, studying business management. He would like to continue in farm ing and feels that a college educa tion is necessary to be successful in agriculture today. SIMMENTAL Late Spr. Haller Calv.-Apr. 1. William E. Honors Go HARRISBURG (Dauphin) David Miller of Bedford has been chosen the 1989 Farm Show’s Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor. Miller who owns and operates Clay Acres Limousin Farms, has only been exhibiting Limousin for three years although he has been raising them for about 12 years. His family is a big part of it. When asked if it was full-time job, he said “Not for me, but it is for my wife Lynda.” Two children are currently involved in 4-H, one is away at college. He is hopeful that they will carry on the tradition. Limousins are a relatively new breed, designed to meet the demand for leaner meat, accord ing to Miller. Limousin Lt. Sprg. Heifer Calv., Cal.
