The new name does not indicate new responsibilities but more accurately describes the laborat ory’s responsibilities. The lab has always diagnosed both diseases and production fail ures of birds and mammals, according to Dr. Thomas Drake, extension veterinarian for the laboratory. The new name better represents the laboratory as a resource for veterinarians, exten sion agents, producers and others who need questions answered about disease and production problems. Drake says that poultry and livestock—cattle, swine, sheep and goats—make up the majority of cases they receive. The labora tory also works with horses, cats, dogs and even wild animals such as raccoons and deer. The Penn State lab is one of three diagnostic laboratories for mammals and one of four labs for birds in Pennsylvania. The other mammal labs are in Summerdale near Harrisburg and Kennett Square in Chester County. The other bird labs are in Delaware Valley, Summerdale, and Kennett Square.
