Com paction is the reduction of soil pore space resulting from the compressive effect of heavy machinery and from the destruc tion of natural soil aggregates by excessive tillage. To help farmers understand and correct sod compaction, a new Cornell Cooperative Extension fact sheet, “Soil Compaction: Causes, Diagnosis, Prevention and Correction,” was written by Victor Snyder of the Department of Agronomy, New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University. Compacted soil impairs plant root growth, requires higher ener gy for tillage, causes poor drain age, high runoff and erosion, reduces the capacity of soil to store water, increases plant dis ease occurence and hampers see dling emergence. The author identifies the causes of soil compaction, shows what it looks like and then tells how to minimize or correct compaction. Copies of “Soil Compaction: Causes, Diagnosis, Prevention, and Correction” (1255F556.00, 800) are available from the Cor nell University Distribution Cen ter, 7 Research Park, Ithaca, N.Y. 14850. Copies of this fact sheet are also available at some Cornell Cooperative Extension county offices m New York State where price may vary.
