For the first year, the club awarded a scholarship. Vickie Creighton, Manhcim, received the scholarship tor having shown out standing work, achievement and contributions to the 4-H program. Vickie also was named the slate winner, top horseman in the coun ty, and a member of the county team that placed third m state competition. Earning the outstanding teen leader award was Kim Kettering of Manhcim. Grooming and showmanship awards went to Denise Calhoun, Lititz; Kim Kettering, Manhcim; and Vickie Creighton, Manhcim. High sponsorship awards were earned by sisters, LaVonnc and Pam Lehman, Manheim. PHILADELPHIA Remem ber the inflation days of the 1970’5, when the price of sugar topped 650 a pound? That was before Congress legi slated to stabilize sugar prices in the 1981 Farm Bill. Joy and Kim Kclicnng were honored for the best project story. Sugar Prices Hinge On New the U.S. Sweetncr Producers Group, 75% of the general public supported legislation to stabilize the price. But Martha Rittinger of Chilli cothe, Ohio, said that she expects many legislators to balk at a new price freeze. Calling the issue “politically unpopular to the unin formed,” Rittinger, a com produc er whose goods often end up as refined com sweetners, said that consumers and producers alike must work now to convince Con gress not to allow the Sugar Act to die. Matthew and Michael Fahnes tock of Manhcim, were honored for their sportsmanship and cooperation. Klutz-of-lhc-ycar award went to Hope Sellers of East Petersburg. High point awards went to Kim Kettering, Ashhc Nelson and Jason Anthony. In other business, Michael Fah nestock was given AQHA papers for Tuffy the quarter horse coll awarded him by club parents, Mick and Darlene Duller of DMB Stables, Mt. Joy. James Huber, county commis sioner, was made an honorary membdr of the club and given a Saddle Cinches 4-H hat. “It’s amazing how many people don’t realize how widespread our need for sugar is,” Rittinger said.
