LEOLA, PA 17540 WESTFALIA SVSfiMAL Conservationists, Contractors Join To Fight Erosion LEESPORT (Berks) The U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service (SCS) has joined with the Land Improve ment Contractors of America (LICA) to train conservation con tractors as a way to speed up the application of soil and water con servation practices. These prac tices are needed by farmers with highly erodible land so they can comply with the conservation pro visions of the 1985 Farm Bill. SCS Chief Wilson Scaling and LICA President Jim Jacobs signed an agreement that marks a new level of cooperation between a USDA agency and a private organization. Chief Scaling said, “To stay eligible for USDA programs, farmers with highly erodible crop land need to have a conservation plan by 1990 and have the planned practices applied by the end of 1994. That means a tremendous number of conservation practices must be installed andmust meet SCS specifications.” Scaling said that SCS can not meet this goal alone. “This agreement will enable conservation contractors to improve their skills and assist in checking out the completed .ST] RD 2 Elverson, PA Grand Prize Winner, Weaverline Feed Cart AMOS FISHER RES.: 717-687-8871 RICK THOMPSON RES.: 717-627-1162 son Inc . 717-656-3307 * FEEDING EQUIPMENT work.” Under the agreement, SCS will train conservation contractors in layout and checking of conserva tion practices. The goal is to deve lop conservation contractors with the knowledge and skills to handle both the construction and the required documentation of the soil conservation practices. LICA’s local chapters like the Pennsylvania Land Improvement Contractors Association (PLICA) will encourage conservation con tractors to become trained. The training is voluntary and will be available to both member and non-member contractors. PLICA Executive Director Vernal C. Miles notes that such an effort has been under way in Pennsylvania for some years.- “A good percen tage of our contractors already have obtained this training and have the authority,” reports Miles. PLICA has 220 members in Penn sylvania. Another 25 firms that supply contracting materials are associate members. Nationwide, LICA reports that 1,600 contractors are already qualified. SCS hopes to see the number double by 1990. SCS ran domly field checks each contrac tor’s practices annually to assure 30 YEARS AGO -When youngsters in one family enter eight baby beef in a major show, that’s news. When they cap ture the Grand and Reserve championships of the entire junior division of a major livestock exposition, that’re really news. But when they take seven steers into that show and place at the top, in order of standing within their entries in every class with every animal they enter, that’s impossible. At least it was until Paul, Wesley and Rhoda Mast, Morgan town, Berks County, did just that Wednesday at the Pennsylvania National Livestock Exposition. Wesley, 15, exhibited one of his Angus steers to the Grand Champ ionship over the Hereford of brother Paul, age 19, and a shor thorn, exhibited by Connie Quesenberry, Stewartstown 4-H member. • Sales • Installation • Service NORTHEAST AGRI SYSTEMS, FLYWAY BUSINESS PARK 139 A West Airport Rd.
