Eastern marketed 2.1 billion pounds of milk for its members during the fiscal year ending March 31,1988, resulting in sales of $261 million and net proceeds of $139,000. Those audited results compare with sales of $298.6 mil lion and net proceeds of $233,000 for fiscal 1987. In fiscal ’B7 the co op marketed 2.33 billion pounds of milk. ‘The sales decline resulted from a drop in government-controlled milk prices, and from lower vol ume due to a high percentage of Northeast dairy farmers going out of business,” General Manager Michael Donovan said during the co-op’s annual meeting OcL 4-5 in Syracuse, N.Y. R. La Verne McCarty, the dairy farmer president of Eastern’s board of directors, noted that the reduced net proceeds were partly a result of the cooperative’s decision early in the fiscal year to pay far mers directly all premiums (or cash bonuses) that Eastern was able to negotiate with customers. These premiums were above the government-set price for fanners’ raw milk. Eastern farmers received in excess bf $2.7 million in premiums obtained from customers -- plus, Eastern paid out nearly $300,000 from its own coffers as special fall premiums. The fall premium prog ram - designed to encourage far mers to shift milk production away from the “spring flush” period to the fall when milk volumes are lower - “accomplished its objec tive and provided the cooperative with additional fall milk to meet its contractual requirements,” Dono van said. The general manager also com mended the employees of East ern’s Dairy Products Division for record sales of $8.2 million and profitable operations for the 9th consecutive year. The division, with offices in Canton, operates six dairy stores in Pennsylvania and New York, and product deliv ery routes covering 30,000 cus tomers in an 11-state area. “This division, which is being RAYMOND HARNISH OXFORD, PA t SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22 10 AM - 3 PM Computerized Sow Feeding System FARMER BOY AG, PH 71 7 866 7565 410 E LINCOLN AVE MVERSTOWN PA 17067 BEST IN DESIGN PRICE AND EXPERIENCE Swine & Poultry Systems Specialists restructured as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Eastern Milk Produc ers, is continuing to aggressively expand both store sales and its rur al route distribution with positive results for its cooperative owners,” Donovan said.
