Grills Shows West Lampeter Fair Swine, Sheep Champs
BY USA RISSER
LAMPETER (Lancaster)
Gary Grills had a feeling his
12S-pound heavyweight lamb was
something special. Judge Don
Mayer confirmed this when he
chose the Hampshire-Suffolk lamb
as the grand champion of the West
Lampeter Fair on Wednesday.
About four hours later Grills
was in the winner’s circle again,
this time with the grand champion
swine.
Grills, who has been showing
lambs for six years and pigs for
two years, also showed last year’s
grand champion lamb at Lampeter.
The son of Harvey and Annamary
Grills in Ephrata, Gary next will
show his champion lamb at the
Manheim Fair next week.
Friday night, however, was the
last public appearance for Grills’
DeKalb gilt On that night, the
215-pound hog and the other 100
swine were sold at auction as were
the show’s beef animals.
Judge Henry Gruber, left, selected this DeKalb gilt as the
grand champion of the West Lampeter Fair swine show.
Gary Grills, a Grassland FFA Chapter member, owned the
240-pound animal.

Charger, Wendall Landis’ light
heavyweight lamb was chosen for
the fair’s reserve grand champion
lamb. The lamb, also to be shown
at the Manheim Fair, was consid
ered by the 12-year old as having a
good chance “because it’s a pretty
complete package.”
Landis, the son of Abe and Dot
tie Landis of Manheim, has been
showing lambs for three years and
showed the grand champion at last
year’s Lancaster County 4-H
Roundup.
Sixteen-year-old Laura Folker
exhibited a 240-pound barrow that
judge Henry Gruber named as
reserve grand champion of the
show. Folker, who has’been show
ing for nine years, also showed the
grand champion hog at this years
Elizabethtown Fair.
The daughter of Tony and Edith
Folker of New Holland, Laura
attributes part of her Hampshire-
Duroc’s championship form to the
