UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre) The 75th Penn State Horticul ture Show will be held Homecom ing weekend, Oct. 8 and 9, at the Agricultural Arena near Beaver Stadium. Show hours are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Under the theme "A Diamond Jubilee: A Stroll Down Me- —y Lane,” visitors will experience horticulture from colonial times through the present. Most plants used in the exhibits are for sale. They can be reserved and picked up after the show on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Other plants, including tropical and flowering house plants and herbs, will be sold dur ing the show. Apples, cider, pump kins, honey and fresh mushrooms will also be sold. Exhibits cover the inside of the Ag Arena. Tons of dirt and mulch are trucked into the arena each year to hold the live trees and plants. This year’s exhibits include col onial gardens, pioneer gardens and tum-of-the-century gardens, as well as views of horticulture from the 1920 s through the present. The World War II “Victory Garden” exhibit, for example, will include a demonstration of canning tech niques from the 19405. The “Baby Bloomers” exhibit, a look at gar dens of the 1950 s and 19605, will feature a bridge crossing a stream and a traditional white picket fence. The Horticulture Show has been held in some form every year since 1908 with the exception of the years during World War 11. It began in January 1908 as an apple show sponsored by the Depart ment of Horticulture. Over the next 20 years, die show had several different formats. It was part of an agriucltural fair and a three day “horticulture week,” and some years it was held as a separate event. Landscape architecture was brought into the event in the 19305, when the show took on more of its current look. The show’s location was moved often during its first 32 years, from an attic in one of the agriculture buildings, to tents, to greenhouses, to Borland Lab, to the old Armory where Willard Building now stands. In 1940 it moved to the Stock Pavilion now called the Pavilion Theater and remained there until 1962 when it was relo cated to the old Ice Pavilion.
