814-Ltnc**t»r Farming, Saturday, Septembar 24,1988 Packed And Ready To Compete At State Pageant BY LOU ANN GOOD COLUMBIA On Wednes day, Julie Greider’s pink satin gown hung in the closet, her lug gage stood nearby. And on the dining room table, her prized scrapbook, recording her events as Lancaster’s reigning dairy prin cess, was ready for judging at this weekend’s state dairy princess competition. Julie, along with 39 other con testants, spent hours preparing for the annual pageant Many particip ants needed to miss school, work and social hours to get their scrap books, costumes and skits ready for the promotional competition. Julie’s dad, Robert, said, “Julie hasn’t been able to help us much in the past two weeks.” But he is not complaining. He and his wife, Marian, consider Julie’s job of speaking for the dairy industry a and you can see it’s a tribute to her perfectionist tendencies to do things precisely and with detail. Julie has more than herself to prepare for competition. She is entering her steer, Coby, in the Lampeter Fair next cess, packed her bags to attend the state pageant held from Thursday through Friday in Harrisburg. priviledge. This is his second daughter who was named the county dairy princess. In 1981, Deb (now Garber) was first state runnerup. Normally Julie, who works full time on her parents’ farm, is grate ful that her parents are understand ing of her schedule. Nonetheless, she said, “I’m missing my favorite job—com harvesting. I like run ning the baler for chopping.” She finds it relaxing to milk their 120 cows, which requires about three hour stints twice daily. Labeled a perfectionist by her dad, Julie demonstrates that trait by the detailed work she has put into her scrapbook, which is required of all county princesses. Julie has meticulously crosslitched four cows on her cover design. Photos, stenciling, and typewritten captions are attractively displayed inside. Included are some news paper articles promoting nutrition that Julie has written herself. Julie said, “Even if I don’t win, it’s nice to have this scrapebook to refer to in years to come.” Although some others complain about store promotions, Julie does not. She said, “I think they are real ly beneficial.” If shoppers ignore her or refuse the handouts, she said, “I keep a friendly smile. Everyone needs to take some rejection.” She added, “Basically I like everything about being a dairy princess.” If there is anything she is a little bit nervous about, it’s the judges’ interview. She said, “I like to pre pare, but there’s really no way to prepare for that.” As county princess, Julie will begin a public speaking course in October. In the meantime, she has been getting plenty of practice speaking to groups whose ages range from preschoolers to senior citizens. She was also commence ment speaker for her graduation from Hempfield High School this past June. In school, she was a member of the National Honor Society and played field hockey and basketball. She is an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. As a 4-H baby beef member, Julie is grooming her steer, Coby, for competition in the Lampeter Fair next week. The next to youngest of seven children, Julie and her one brother are the only ones who have con tinued on the farm. Julie said, “1 was thinking about being a para legal, but now I’m seriously con sidering staying on the farm.” Like the 39 other girls who attend the competition this week, Julie considers it an honor to repre sent the dairy industry. She said, “Only one can win the state crown, but all can help the industry.” See your nearest I\EW HOLLA(\D Dealer for Dependable Equipment and Dependable Service: PENNSYLVANIA Annvllle, PA BHM Farm Equipment, Inc RD 1 717-867-2211 Beavertown, PA B&R Farm Equipment, Inc RD 1, Box 217 A 717-658-7024 Belleville, PA Ivan J Zook Farm Equipment Belleville, Pa 717-935-2948 Canton, PA Hess Farm Equipment 717-673-5143 Carlisle, PA Paul Shovers, Inc 35 East Willow Street 717-243-2686 Chambersburg, PA Clugston Implement, Inc FID 1 717-263-4103 Davldsburg, PA George N Gross, Inc R D 2, Dover, PA 717-292-1673 Elizabethtown, PA Messick Farm Equipment, Inc Rt 283 - Rheem's Exit 717-367-1319 Gettysburg, PA Yinghng Implements, Inc 3291 Taney town Rd 717-359-4848 Greencastle, PA Meyers Implement's Inc 400 N Antrim Way P O Box 97 717-597-2176 Halifax, PA Sweigard-Bros RD 3, Box 13 717-896-3414 Hamburg, PA Shartlesville Farm Service RD 1, Box 1392 215-488-1025 Hanover, PA Sheets Brothers, Inc 1061 Carlisle St Hanover, PA 17331 717-632-3660 Honey Brook, PA Dependable Motor Co East Main Street 215-273-3131 215-273-3737 Honey Grove, PA Norman D Clark & Son, Inc Honey Grove, PA 717-734-3682 Hughesvllle, PA Farnsworth Farm Supplies, Inc 103 Cemetery Street 717-584-2106 Lebanon, PA Keller Bros Tractor Co RD 7, Box 405 717-949-6501 Loyavllle, PA Paul Shovers, Inc Loysville, PA 717-789-3117 Lynnport, PA Kermit K Kistler, Inc Lynnport, PA 215-298-2011 Mahaffey, PA Hutton Farm Equipment RD 2 814-277-6647 New Holland, PA ABC Groff, Inc 110 South Railroad 717-354-4191 New Park, PA M&R Equipment Inc PO Box 16 717-993 2511 Oley, PA C J Wonsidler Bros RD 2 215-987-6257 Pitman, PA Schreffler Equipment Randy L Schreffler Pitman, PA 717-648-1120 Quakertown, PA C J Wonsidler Bros RD 1 215-536-1935 Quarryville, PA C E Wiley & Son, Inc 101 South Lime Street 717-786-2895 Rlngtown, PA Ringtown Farm Equipment Ringtown, PA 717-889-3184 Tamaqua, PA Charles S Snyder, Inc RD 3 717-386-5945 West Grove, PA S G Lewis & Son, Inc R D 2, Box 66 215-869-2214 MARYLAND Churchville, MD Walter G Coale, Inc 2849-53 Churqhville Rd 301-734-7722 Frederick, MD Ceresville Ford New Holland, Inc Rt 26 East 301 662 4197 Outside MD, 800 331 9122 Hagerstown, MO Antielam Ford Tractor 301-791-1200 NEW JERSEY Washington, NJ Frank Rymon & Sons 201-689-1464 Woodstown, NJ Owen Suppfy Co Broad Street & East Avenue 609-769-0308
