Young farmers must enter their prize livestock in the 4-H Club and FFA classes by October 11. -(Feature by Jack H. Owens) ‘Tomatoes are just about shot,” seemed to be the most often expressed opinion Thursday among farmers and brokers in Lan caster County. Blight moved into the county several weeks ago, but did not become severe in tomato fields until 10 days ago. When it did strike, however, destruction was rapid and in some places almost complete. The warmer and drier weather at the beginning of the week gave a small bit of hope to growers when it seemed the blight-ridden fields were holding their own and appeared the fruits still on the vin es would ripen. With cool nights and increased humidity during the later days of the week, hope for any recovery faded. - A newcomer this week to the Lancaster Farming staff and the eastern United States is Odiss L. “Ag Journalist (Continued from Peg* A 1) Purcell submitted three articles that appeared in Lancaster Farm ing on Lancaster County water ways, their clean-up and their rela tionship to the Chesapeake Bay pollution problems; on Garden Spot High School’s Grassland FFA Building Our American Communities Project; and a series on Johncs, a disease in dairy cattle causing economic hardship to Pennsylvania dairy farmers. Purcell, who resides in Notting ham, is the wife of Edward L. Pur cell, Jr. and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Brewer of Oxford, Pa. She is a 1986 graduate of the University of Delaware. An award of $5OO will be pre sented to Ms. Purcell at PcnnAg’s 110th Annual Convention, which will be held from September 18-20 at the Sheraton Inn, Gettysburg, Pa. The State Farm Show will be held next January 12 through 16, making it the 43rd since the event was founded in 1917. - The biggest crop year on record is forecast as of August 1 by the Crop Reporting Board. An estimated all-crop produc tion index of 113 would be con siderably more than the previous record of 106 set in 1948 and equalled in 1956 and last year. The per acre yield index covering 28 leading crops is estimated at 137, a record high, and 8 per cent above last year. Of The Year” Robert C.
