Correspondent BEDFORD Becky Mohr of Bakers Summit paraded a “tall, stylish” five year old “that excels in dairy character” into the Junior Dairy Show at the Bedford County Fair and gathering the kind remarks from Judge John Howard of Willow Street, regardless that the cow had no competition in class. But when Jimita Sexy Liana by Ocean-View Scxation stood among other blue ribbon winners, Howard continued his commenda tion, calling her “a tremendous dairy cow,” and awarding her senior and grand champion Hols tein honors. A “nicely uddered” junior two year-old that Howard liked for her frame and strength, as well, earned the reserve senior and reserve grand titles for Jim Carman of Imler RD 1. Announcement of the award to Salon was made during an awards luncheon at SWCS’s 43rd annual meeting. The Kenneth E. Grant Scholar ship Fund was established by SWCS 11 years ago to provide support for graduate-level research on a topic selected by the organiza tion. The fund was created by friends and associates of Grant fol lowing his retirement as admini strator of the Soil Conservation Service. Salon, a graduate student in plant breeding, will work on breeding a new strain of eastern gamagrass that will produce more healty, viable seed. Eastern gama grass has almost been grazed into extinction because of cattle’s pre ference for the grass, which is highly palatable. SWCS is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to promot ing the wise use of land and water resources. It has nearly 13,000 members in the United States, Canada and 80 other countries.
