A24-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 27, 1988 30 YEARS AGO -The tobacco harvest is in high gear on county farms this week with reports of very good tobacco from all parts of the county. Tobacco already in sheds is start ing to cure well with no signs of damage from hot weather. Some farmers seem to think that cool nights have helped. Reports from many parts of the county indicate that the tobacco is generally of good size and quality. Farmers reported most of the other major crops in the county are growing and maturing well this week. -The 4-H Pig Clubs from Lan caster and Lebanon Counties staged their 18th annual roundup and sale at the Lancaster Union Stockyards on Wednesday. Weiland Pack ing Co., Phoenixville, paid 51 cwt. for it. William Maule, Quarryville R 2 had the champion group of ten. Their total weight was 2065 pounds. Kunzler and Co. was the buyer at 27.50 per pound. Robert Groff of Peach Bottom had the reserve champion group of ten weighing a total of 2455 pounds. They brought 26.50 cents per pound from J. John Barley of Conestoga, a Lancaster County cattle feeder and state representative, made the challenge here last week upon win ning the Ag Republicans chair-, -On Thursday of last week, pretty Mary Jane Hill was runner up in the County 4-H Posture Queen Contest. On Friday she was runner-up no longer but a queen in her own right. At York she was crowned Peach Dessert Queen of Pennsylvania for her Peach Crisp pie which she made in front of the judges from an original recipe. He replaced Don Unangst of Greenville, who stepped down earlier this summer after being named state director of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. No changes were made in other Ag Republican offices. Ernie Mill er, Hamburg, remains as vice chairman; Ed Nehrig, Homer City, as treasurer; and Carolyn Rutter, Dover, as secretary. “Farmer support is critical to win control of the state senate and house of representatives,” Barley said in calling for more participa tion by farmers. In the state senate, he noted, par ty control could be decided in the tight 27th senatorial district race where senate ag committee chair man Edward Helfrick, R.
