'*j , jjTOs >lll^ New Jersey State Officers Officers of the New Jersey Association recently attended a National FFA Leadership Confer ence for State Officers. The con ference was being held at New Brunswick, N.J. This is one of nine national conferences being held across the nation. The FFA conference is designed to improve leadership and commu nication skills, develop under standing of state FFA officer responsibilities and prepare state officers for more effective leader ship roles in their State FFA Asso ciation. The conference also pro vides a forum for the exchange of Tulpehocken Chapter John Bicksler, son of Ella Bicksler of Bemville, was one of 379 Youth Scholars who attended the National Institute of Coopera tion in Rochester, New York. John Bicksler was sponsored by Young Farmers & Blue Mountain Council. More than 1,510 adults, young fanners, and youth, from 46 states and four foreign countries, attended the Institute, which is sponsored by the American Insti tute of Cooperation, Washington, D.C. The National Institute is the largest annual educational event devoted to cooperatives. This year more than 85 program activities and nearly 100 speakers focused on the theme “Designing for Opportunity.” In 1989 the Nation al Institute will be held July 24-27, in Indianapolis. The American Institute of Cooperation, an affiliate of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, is the national edu cation organization for farmer cooperatives. Organized in 1925, AlC’s purpose is to develop increased understanding of cooperatives. Bicksler was one of the students from the Tulpehockcn FFA Chap ter of Bcmvdle. Chosen to attend HAPPENINGS ideas between officers from sever al slates. A highlight of the meeting is the opportunity to work with the national FFA officers who are con ducting the conferences. In addi tion to training sessions, the 1988 program includes a public speak ing workshop, a banquet program and many other leadership activi ties all designed to improve the communication skills of state FFA officers. The National FFA Leadership Conference for State Officers is sponsored by Merck and Com pany, Inc. as a special project of the National FFA Foundation, Inc. John Bicksler the 1988 Washington Leadership Conference. Also chosen was Les ter Bashore. Visits to Arlington Cemetery, Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and Mt. Vernon plus other histori cal sights were included in the conference. Highlights of the week was a visit to the Capitol Building. The Tulpehocken FFA advisors arc Lisa Shirey and Barry Kellner.
